SAT Essay Disaster

I was tutored to read only the prompt... a really, really, stupid thing. I read how the prompt said that one must make discoveries by focusing only on one goal...

I wrote about Gorbachev and how he used many methods (perestrokia/glasnost) to achieve democratization in the USSR.

I also wrote about how Anne Sullivan taught Hellen Keller how to "hear" and "see" through a series of steps...

My mistake was I interpreted "discoveres" as "goals/tasks."

Will this result in a double zero? I am really afraid that the people at CB will give me the big '00' for this, as it may have been an "off topic essay." Is CB stringent about what is relevent to the quote?

ooh..i don't think they'll give you a 0, because that's just not fair, especially if it was in the prompt (i personally never look at the prompts), but i think by the looks of it, you might get 7-9 because you used good examples.....ummm...hopefully

I actually learned about the guy who said the quote in anatomy class. Should have mentioned him. dah

Goldfish, not to sound selfish, but thanks for your help with this post.

Does anyone remember if my topic at all resembles the prompt (I don't remember it).. thanks!!

Its a slight stretch, but you certainly won't get a 0. If you wrote well, maybe an 8. I talked about the Manhattan Project and Watson and Crick, because they were actual discoveries, not just tasks. But you'll be ok.

any other opinions?

Well, unless it asked you specifically abotu scientific and technological discoveries, I don't think discovery is too far off from goal. But the, I worte about immigrants and To Kill a Mockingbird, and I think my essay sucked and didn't pertain to the topic.

I used Andrew Wiles with Fermat's Last Theorem (locked himself up for 10 years), Da Vinci and his seclusion while studying anatomy, and Oedipus Rex (needed non-history) and the important though bad discovery.

Does it matter if you make up your examples? For example, making up quotes from somebody in history and also making up a book to support your idea? I heard that it doesn't matter, but I just want to make sure.

I got a different question from you but from what I understand from your first post, the word 'discoveries' is pretty open-ended. It can be a scientific discover, a discovery of a hidden talent, discovering truths about yourself... Purely based on the info you've provided so far, I don't think your essay was off-topic. As long as you don't completely stray from the question, I think you should be fine.

ummm i didn't even finish my essay. plus i blabbed on and on about something i completely made up aka personal experience. i should have used real facts and events but i couldn't think because the topic was kind of weird for me.

Can we keep this ON TOPIC???

no you already got a few responses all you can do now is wait.. stop *****ing for christ sake

darkrulerII: I talked about watson and crick too!!

Guys.. this ismy forum...

I just used Einstein and DaVinci I think DaVinci was an obvious choice to show that one can be the master of many, many subjects

But he focused heavily on individual subjects for periods of time =)

they dont need to know that, plus you know that he was a military inventor working for an Italian ruler while he did many of his works of arts. He was a master of many subjecst

yup =). I did several school reports on him and am studying his style in art class.
