SHOULD HEROES BE DEFINED AS PEOPLE WHO SAY WHAT THEY THINK WHEN WE OURSELVES LACK THE COURAGE TO SAY IT?

HERO is a term that has traditionally been bestowed up on people with immense physical strength, the likes of Mohammed Ali. However, heroism can be of different types, be it in physical sphere, mental strength, or even spiritual strength. In many ways a hero is someone who says what he thinks and believes in, when others are afraid to do the same. A hero is a person of vision, who begins with an end in sight, leads and inspires the people around him to act with courage. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther were the embodiment of these heroic qualities.
Mahatma Gandhi, the architect of the Indian Freedom movement, had a vision of free secular India, where all the people, irrespective of their age, sex, caste, creed, religion, and educational qualifications could peacefully live together, and realize their dreams. He openly spoke against the tyranny of his British rulers, boycotted the English goods, and started Quit India movement with just a hand full of young followers. Even when the whole country was afraid to speak out, he raised his voice fearlessly. Physical torture and imprisonment could not break his resolve for national freedom. He firmly believed in his cause, and told his rulers you can imprison my body but not my spirit. Ultimately the Indian freedom was won through the heroic efforts of the Mahatma, without a war being waged against the British Empire. His only weapons were his simplicity, his belief in the rightness of his cause, and the method that used was non violence Ahimsa.
Martin Luther King is another example of a hero who did what no others were ready to do. King spoke out against the poor treatment of African-Americans by the white Americans at a time when most blacks were petrified to even look white people in the eye. King too was imprisoned, but he spoke out courageously for the rights of the poor black people. His immortal words I have a dream shall echo in the hearts of the people for ever. Martin Luther King said what he thought was right without any fear of the consequences: a true hero in every sense of word.
However, some one who acts and speaks whatever he fancies isnt always a hero. On the contrary such a person can become a menace to the society. History provides us with examples of such people. Hitler and Mussolini are two such people who by acting out their whims and fancies brought untold misery on humanity, and caused a great destruction can not be called heroes.
A hero will always be somebody who says what he thinks is right, speaks out openly for the social justice when we ourselves lack the courage to do so. He acts bravely, leads from the front without any fear of consequences.
