Some of the Ivies use the SAT essay for admission, and also look at the writing section. I got an 8, but I think I deserved more, with a 71 subscore and 690 overall. So I want to know do they see the score college board gives you or just the essay, and do they really look at the writing section? Everyone says the writing doesn't count but is that true for the Ivies?

haha, i hope my schools read my SAT essay. it was about carrie bradshaw and meredith grey.

i’m sure they don’t completely disregard the writing score though, but a much more significant weight is placed on CR + M

I’m pretty sure there’s no way for them to see your essay, only the associated scores.

Yeah! my essay was reaaallyy bad and I got a 9 on it but I got an 80 on the MC so my writing score was overall a 770…I really hope they don’t see the essay score! Does anyone know for a fact that they don’t?

^A 9 on the SAT essay is not THAT bad. But I have a feeling that most elite colleges place a much greater emphasis on your admission essays, not the SAT one.

Phew! I’m not retaking. 690 is on the lower end of the some of the Ivies’ scores, but not out of range.

Incorrect. Any college that desires to can ask College Board for a view of any applicant’s essay. If you submitted SAT scores to that college, it may look at your essay, if that is of interest to the admission committee.

^That’s very true. But given the fact that Ivies receive so many apps, I don’t think that the admission officers will have much time to request the essay from College Board and have more work by reading another essay in addition to the ones that they require in the application.

For the most part, the essays that you write in your application are the most important pieces of writing in college admissions. Those essays serve several purposes: (1) They show the admission officer your thinking process and how well you can write; (2) How well you fit on campus; and (3) How you will contribute to campus. There are probably more uses behind the personal essays in your college app … it’s just that I can’t think about more right now.

It looks like College Board endeavors to make the process as convenient for colleges as possible.
