Question: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority?
Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority? Yes, it is. Would it benefit us in a short term? No, would it benefit us in a long term? That would depend on the idea. Questioning authority shows that we are thinkers and idealists. No ruler is perfect, they are bound to make many mistakes. Questioning authority is necessary to better our civilization.
In the book World without End, the characters constantly question authority in order to better their own lives and the lives of others. They question the Prior, and even the King. For the short term, all the authorities made these characters miserable. For the long term, it would greatly benefit them all. By the end, they have succeeded in successful and prosperous lives. That was accomplished by fighting for their ideas even when their authorities pushed them down. Questioning authorities all depends on who you question and how they feel about it. Most do not take that questioning very well and that is why political warfare is so dangerous especially when you are the weaker opponent.
Questioning authorities teaches us how to think and plan, with each question, a different outcome. How to question one and who you are questioning all come into play, each outcome depends on any factor that plays a role even the smallest one. Authorities need to be told when they have made a mistake as they seem to do it frequently. But not questioning makes worse any civilization or organization.
