Hi, I am taking my SAT tomorrow. This is the essay I have written. It s exactly as I wrote and hence, may have some grammatical errors. Please reply as soon as you can, thanks!!
Prompt:
“A better understanding of other people contributes to the development of moral virtues. We shall be both kinder and fairer in our treatment of others if we understand them better. Understanding ourselves and understanding others are connected, since as human beings we all have things in common.”
Assignment:
Do we need other people in order to understand ourselves?
My Essay:
One cannot always rely on self-introspection. Understanding others is key. When on assess onself, the mind is biased and convoluted at that point of thinking. By observing and understanding other human beings, one can procure a plethora of moral values and ethics. This will help for a much better understanding of onself.
Let us take an example of John Smith, a bully in high school. As a bully. he would consider himself superior and was disdainful. He was then moved to a new school. This was when he realized his superiority-complex and how he mistreated others. In this new school, John was being bullied; he finally understood the suffering he caused others. He could understand the pain of those he bullied and regretted his past actions.
From this example, we can see a clear example of how one’s outlook and behavior towards others can change when subjected to different environments.
An example from history can further advocate the stated motion. Taking Mahatma Gandhi, a freedom fighter, we will be able to comprehend the understanding of other human beings. He promoted peace and detested violence. Gandhi understood how others felt towards the colonization of India but persevered in his notion of peaceful protests. On the other hand, there were extremists who fought for freedom and were even willing to give up their lives for it. But Gandhi was unnerving; his viewpoint could not be swayed. He understood the patriotic feelings of others and even managed to convert many extremists into passive protesters. He did this through negotiations and more importantly, because he could understand their viewpoints on colonization.
From the examples, it is evident that one can understand others better when one comprehends their feelings and views. Hence becoming benevolent, magnanimous and impartial in nature.
