SAT essay tip?

<p>When writing the SAT essay should you assume the reader knows nothing about your example?
For example,
Essay topic: what motivates people to change?
1st example:
From rags to riches, Andrew Carnegie began his life as an Irish immigrant...so on.
Or is a backstory necessary if referencing to a latter part in his life?</p>

<p>NO. You must not give any back story. You are not writing a term paper, biography or report. It should read more like:
"Carnegie, who was able to rise in the face of serious opposition shows us that poverty is a great motivator for change. His perseverance was never more evident than when he …</p>
