Do you guys have any useful SAT Essay tips? Perhaps things not to do, and things that are essential for one's essay. Post them here!

To score well on the essay, you typically want to use all the space available to you. Your essay should contain 2-3 examples to support your thesis, and should be applicable to the prompt. The general consensus is that examples from history and literature are superior to personal examples, but I have always used personal examples to great success. You could go either way, or even do one of each.

A good trick to remember: the essay graders do not have the time to validate your examples, meaning you can lie about a book and get away with it. Say you have a prompt, but cannot think of any historical or literary examples that support your thesis. You can fabricate a situation in a non-existing novel, provided it applies to the prompt, and use it as an example. I certainly wouldn’t recommend doing this for all of your examples, but if you find yourself pressed for time and cannot think of anything else, it’s worth a shot.

Hope this helped.
