sat essay

i recently took the SATs and got a 2120 (760 writing, 720 reading, 640 math) and got an 8 on the essay. on collegeboard.com, it says that the sat essay is used for admission at middlebury. im obviously retaking the test as i didnt do that well, but say i get an 8 on the essay again—is that a really big deal?

Try the ACT with writing? My accepted sons got 12/12 and 10/12, respectively.

SAT grades the essays kinda weird if I remember correctly. I can’t remember what exactly gives you better scores, but as just about everything with some of these tests, there are things you can do to up your score - length of sentence, transitions, verbiage. While I like the ACT better for a host of reasons, son did pretty much exactly the same on the essays on both test.

A 760 with an essay subscore of an 8… wierd. The 760 alone will look impressive to Middlebury, so I don’t think getting the 8 will have any effect (positive or negative) on your application. At this point, I wouldn’t bother retaking. Relax over your winter break and tackle any supplements that might be remaining.

I wouldn’t bother retaking the SAT. My son got a 34 on the ACT with writing but just got an 8 on the essay and he was admitted EDI so I don’t think it matters too much. 760 is a great score. Good luck.

Length.

You might want to retake anyway to bring up that math score, especially if you’ve only taken the SAT once.

760 is above 75th percentile for them

You’re fine. That essay is of minimal importance, especially since (as shrewy said) you scored above the 75th percentile. Don’t be concerned.

760 may be above the 75th percentile for them, but 640 on math definitely is not.

thanks everyone for your advice. yeah i think i’m going to retake them since i’m a junior and have the time to… and 640 math is definitely not what i was aiming for haha.

I would seriously consider OldbatsieDoc’s recommendation and take the ACT, too

My daughter was recently accepted ED to a college with similar statistics. i.e. SAT/ACT scores, etc. I’ll never know, of course, but I believe one reason she was successful was because she submitted her ACT in lieu of SAT

Concur with Crewdad… son only ended up submitting his SAT to the schools that required subject tests even if you took the ACT and were submitting that score as well. But quite a few were satisfied with just the ACT w/writing and bottom line was he had done better on it.

Midd obviously doesn’t care much which standardized test you take, and some people do MUCH better on the ACT, so I would try it. As you said, you have time.If you are only going to do SAT2s, make sure you don’t have them all in the same subject area.

OldbatesieDoc - By same subject area (for SAT2) did you mean not do 2 math ones (implying one math, chem, bio might be OK) or did you mean one from history, one english, one sciences etc. What do you think Midd will accept?

They will accept whatever. Your chances are better with a high math, and a high non-quantitative score. My opinion only, I have no proof. If you only send quant scores, make sure your essay is extremely good.
