I have taken the SAT about a year ago, and suddenly a question popped into my head: isn't the SAT essay scores more or less arbitrary? Maybe I am totally wrong if the scorers use crude methods and weightings and averages and what not, but what is the difference from a 450 essay to a 460? 450 to 500? 450 to 550? Of course there is an obvious change when we reach a line to define a "category" for essay gradings, but the scores around 450 (440, 460) and the scores around 500 (490, 510) make the whole process ambiguous.
