If you're bored enough, you can read and score my essay. It got two 3's. I see some errors now [length, etc.], but I thought it would at least get 4's. The graders are probably right, though. I was rather disappointed, as it took my scaled MC Writing score of 77 down to a 700...

I don't like the idea, but I feel like just going with the traditional use of a literary, historical, and personal example next time I take it.

*Inconsistency is commonly thought to be an undesirable personality trait, and inconsistent people are viewed as indecisive and weak willed. On the other hand, firm commitment to an idea or plan of action is associated with personal and intellectual strength, stability, and honesty. Thus, once we have made a choice or taken a stand, it is best not to change.

Adapted from Robert B. Cialdini, Influence: How and Why People Agree to Things

Assignment: Is it best not to change our ideas, opinions, or behaviors? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.*

Change is inherently feared by people. This fear is a part of human nature. Sometimes this stubborn quality can be one of our greatest weaknesses.

Routine is something that people find comfort in. However, a comfortable situation is not always a beneficial one. Some overweight people find solace in their favorite, and many times unhealthy, foods. These foods can be great relievers of stress. They can be very harmful as well. Giving up these comfort foods would mean giving up one of their sources of security. Unfortunately, this is why many overweight people never become healthy again, no matter how much they want to; the benefits of a change in lifestyle do not outweigh the fears they have of change.

Racism is one of the greatest travesties of mankind. Those who are racist are some of the most obstinate and opinionated people in the world. No matter what the source of this hatret may be, they never seem to be open to the idea that maybe, just maybe, people are equal. If racists were to change their frame of mind and become open to new ideas, the world would improve drastically. Sadly, racism will likely exist as long as the human race itself.

Consistency and commitment can be a strength at times. Often, though, it only serves to inhibit the growth of human lives and society.
