I have taken the SAT 2 times, and am stopping there. I got an ok score, a 1440 with 770 on reading and 670 on math. However, I got a 5,5, and a 6 both times on the essay. That honestly surprised me, as I am an extremely accomplished writer. I am president of my school’s literary magazine, have been published, and got a 5 on the AP Lang test last year. Also, the english classes at my school are extremely rigorous, and I have always outscored everyone on essays, never getting below a 6, usually hovering around a 7/8. How much will that 16 writing score hurt me? Should I let colleges know in my additional info section that that score is not representative of my writing?
It won’t hurt you at all. Writing is 100% my forte and I got a 17/24. Most colleges don’t even consider the essay, and for those that do, it’s just to see that you’re adequate at writing. That’s a pretty good score! Don’t stress or try to draw any attention to it
If you are interested, you could forward your essay to me and I can give you some idea why your essay received the score that it got. I am a retired English teacher and have worked for several years for Pearson, the company that rates SAT essays for the College Board. There will be no cost to you.
I would love that! Thank you! @Wood5440
A score of 16 isn’t a problem for top schools. Don’t stress.
Okay. Just copy and paste the essay into a message and send it to me. I’ll get back to you within a couple of days.
I don’t think colleges care about the SAT essay score unless they require it. I’m a horrible writer and didn’t practice writing the SAT essay even once before I took the test and ended up with a 22/24. I was happy about it, but realized I still need to bring up my multiple choice (ahem the part that actually matters).
