SAT essay

Question: Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better?

Answer:
Technology changes have had a positive effect on peoples' everyday lives. These changes have enabled peoples' lives to become easier. However, the changes have not necessarily made the lives better (easier lives does not always equal better lives). A prime example of a technological change that has made lives easier, but not necessarily better, is the capability of a computer. The growing capabilities of the computer have allowed people to do everything from their banking to shopping on their home pc. They also have enabled access to all the information in the world at the click of a mouse to young students. Both instances, although beneficial to many people, can also cause harm to peoples' lives.
The growing capabilities of the computer and the Internet have enabled many people to do everyday tasks (such as bill paying, banking, even shopping) on their home computer. This revolutionary change has made life easier by saving time and money (by allowing a person to do these tasks at the comfort of their home, getting rid of the need for transportation). Although life has become easier because of this change, there are also some drawbacks. One harmful effect is that in order to do these tasks online, one must insert many personal details (including address, s.s. number, and credit card information). Accompanied with the growth of the Internet has been a growth of a tactic known as hacking. Hackers (computer users who hack) can find loopholes through the Internet, and find out all the personal information of any individual. This has led to many crimes such as identity theft, and has financially ruined many people.
Another capability of the computer is the access to information. With computers, young students can now open up their eyes to the different aspects of the world. This ability has made research easier and more effective. However, this research has also harmed the intellectual growth of many students. Along with research, the Internet also has many sites in which essays and term papers on various topics can be accessed for free. These sites have tempted students from middle school to college to plagiarize these particular works and hand them in for grading. Although this makes it easier for the students, it does not help the academic growth of the student and will hurt them in the long run.
Technology has had both a positive and an adverse effect on mankind. An example of this type of technology is the computer. The computer is one of the greatest machines ever to be created. Although it makes life easier for millions of people, it has not necessarily made life better in certain situations. Two of these situations include stealing of personal information (identity theft) and plagiarism by students. These two instances go to show that one must use the advantages of present day technology, but not become dependent on them.
