Considering that the rest of my application is mediocre, what is a good score in the CR section? I got 1330 ( M-770 & CR-560) and I am applying for college of engineering.

Wait, where is your Writing score?? And 560 is WAY too low for Cornell especially since you say the rest of your application is mediocre… You should be aiming to get at least a mark upwards of 700

Cornell doesn’t use writing score yet…I think the M is very strong. If it’s supported by strong grades and test scores, along with a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, I think there’s a chance for you…are you a girl? What is your ethnicity? Can you write the best essay of your life, revealing yourself AND letting Cornell know how it will help you achieve your goals with information beyond websites and brochures?

I think there’s a chance. a number is just a number.

^Thanks for your reply.
I am an Indian boy, studying in Singapore. My application is not really mediocre. My ECs, subject choice, research, volunteering and internship make me quite above average. And in my supplement I’ll be talking about how Cornell, the lakes and wilderness, the student environment makes me a perfect fit for Cornell

My S visited a couple of classes and could make his essay really Cornell-Specific. Make sure you do that, as well. I think your CR score is amazing if you’re bilingual…good luck!

Sorry if im going off topic but Swimmer726> Do uni actually care if you are bilingual ?

I myself speak 4 languages (Creole 1st , French 2nd , English 3rd , Hindi 4th). I scored 690 W and 600 CR … I thought i had to re-take those as they were awful …

I don’t think it does because almost all international students are bilingual.

You’re going to be an engineer…the world of graphs and numbers. You clearly are talented.

@swimmer726, the College of Engineering is the only college that does not consider the writing section of the SAT. Every other college, especially Arts and Sciences, places an emphasis on it.

I got 770 on math and 640 on CR and got into the engineering school. I wrote a really solid essay.

^so how did you make your supplement really Cornell specific??

.

I would say it could be considered, but I would not say it is emphasised. I know that for CHE, we were told that for standardized test scores, CR & M were most important. Thread from a couple of years ago on this.

The writing score is reported not matter what…so, it will be seen, even if it’s not “considered”.

Can more people answer this thread.

Thank you

I got an 800/710, and my essays were pretty awesome I think. At least my CommonApp essay was awesome even for an A&S applicant, and my supplement was def above average writing for an engineer haha. Now, talking about the supplement, I’d say you shouldn’t try to make it TOO Cornell specific, and you shouldn’t try to make it about the lakes and wilderness, O_O. Especially if you’re applying to engineering… unless you have some amazing metaphorical ties to your personal experiences or something. Mine had some Cornell specific thoughts in it, but the rest of it was the same as my other engineering supplements and they were most about my own thoughts and ideologies.

I’d say you might want to retake the SAT and aim for a higher CR score, just in case.
