SAT Grammar Problem Thread

Hey guys, since the January SAT is approaching. I thought that it would be a good idea (similarly to the math problem thread) to start a grammar problem thread. I’ll start with one problem. I’ll also answer any questions posted on this thread if they are within my knowledge.

The purpose of the hearing was to determine whether he or his sister was the rightful owner of the house.

A) to determine
B) whether
C) he
D) was
E) no error

For this question, I need some clarification on why C is not the answer. Why is it “he” instead of “him”? I thought that we are supposed to use object pronouns after verbs. In this case, the verb is “determine.” Maybe an explanation can be that “him was the rightful owner of the house” is not grammatically correct? What do you guys think?

“Whether” is a conjunction. It is used in this sentence to join two separate clauses. The verb of the second clause is “was,” not “determine.” Every clause requires a grammatical subject. “He” is a subjective pronoun, so it is correct. “Him” is an objective pronoun, so it would be incorrect.

Easy trick: delete the other person and then sound it out. Would you say “him was the owner”? Nope.
