Okay so I have taken my SAT about six times. I received my ACT scores yesterday and immediately faxed them today. I called my admissions counselor and he told me that my ACT scores were very low. I was planning to take the SAT this month to get them up. I could not register because the last day was Friday and my parents would not pay for it, since I took it so many times. My AP Euro teacher told me I can take the SAT as a walk in on the 24th. Basically, if I don’t improve my verbal score by 70 points (from 460 to 530) I will not be academically qualified. These scores need to be submitted by Feb 15th. Its ironic how I have I always wanted this and now they won’t even look at me just because of something that I took on a Saturday morning. I received a letter from DODMERB. For the Naval Academy, West Point and Merchant Marine Academy I am qualified even though I am overweight defined in the AF height and weight standards. I am assuming if I the Air Force Academy requested my DODMERB results I would be qualified as well, maybe even pilot qualified. But it all comes to this. Honestly, this month has been the hardest in my life. Both emotionally and mentally and I know it won’t stop when I go to the Academy. Even though I might not do so well academically and might not even be given a shot to the academy. I just wanted to thank you all for your support. My parents disprove me joining the military, my friends aren’t as ambitious towards challenge like I am, and my teachers are hardcore anti-military liberals that they don’t support me. This is the only support system I have and I really must express my gratitude. I’m dangerously close of not getting in or even being considered for the prep school, but I won’t give up. If anyone has a few tips for the SAT, I would really appreciate it. Thank you :)

AFPJ,
There is is a lot of good advice on the CC forums -- including the SAT/ACT prep parts of this CC website. Look to the left; see the "SAT/ACT" link under "Top Forums." Check out this first, right at the top of the pinned threads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggi-s-sat-prep-advice.html

This talks about how to get your scores up by focusing on practice -- and, it tells you how to do that. The "Xiggi" method you'll see from the link above, has over 50 pages of posts, and lots of people who swear that it works. It has helped my son, but the key is practice, practice, PRACTICE! As the Xiggi method says, there are 8 practice tests in the "Big Blue Book" (the Official College Board study guide) and if you take all of them you'll improve your score. You can learn a lot just by reading from page 1 to the end.

Good luck!

Don't overthink your answers. If, after reading a question, you think you know the answer, go with it. Don't overanalyze and second guess yourself.

Also, I can help you improve your verbal score right now. Irony is a word that people throw around all the time but generally misuse. Borderline academic qualifications aren't ironic. Read this poem. That is irony.

Haha good engl 211 poem

I've been surprised so far. There's actually some really good ones in the book.

Sounds like AFPJ uses Alanis Morissette's definition of "ironic"...

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic ... don't you think
Chorus

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought ... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
'Well isn't this nice...'
And isn't it ironic ... don't you think
Repeat Chorus

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

It's a traffic jam when you're already late
It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...
Repeat Chorus

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

I don't know if this site will help or not:

Give it your best shot and good luck.

Hi folks!

Okay...here's two English rules that are ALWAYS tested on the SAT/ACT and the MAJORITY of students miss them...

Ready?

"Always different FROM, never different THAN."

"Either - Or, Neither - Nor"

If this doesn't make sense, then you'll understand my point. The comparison situations are typically about two cars, or other items: "So and so's XXXX is different than mine because of YYYYY." Improper grammar. The "either-or, neither-nor" works the same way.

Just two to know.

Another good example of irony. ;)
