When it was the “Scholastic Aptitude Test” back in the 1980s, it was quite coachable. The math section was basically a test of algebra and geometry. The verbal section was mostly an English vocabulary test, since most questions were easy if you knew the words, but difficult if you did not, and there were SAT preparation books filled with words that allegedly appeared on SATs. There were some other test taking skills involved (time management, elementary probability and statistics as applied to the “guessing penalty”), but these were easily coachable.
