SAT I more important than SAT II?

Hey guys,

So I have a dilemma. Right now I have an SAT score of a 2100 (Cr:710, Writing: 720, Math: 670). Because I am applying to Ivies and other top-tier schools, retaking the SAT I is a clear choice that I have decided to take. However, I'm debating whether I should retake a 690 in U.S. history. I already have a 780 on Math IIC and I fully expect to get at least a 2200 on my next attempt on the reasoning. I also got an A in AP U.S. History in my class and am expecting at a 4 (probably 5) on the exam. Do you think these could outweigh my 690? Or do you think I have to take it again? Thanks ahead of time.

Take the SAT in Oct… You need a higher SAT for the schools you want, get it up 150+
Then you can take the II’s in November for the RD schools you apply to

You need to know the SATII requirement for all the schools you are applying to, especially your EA or ED school(s) if you are doing them. Harvard and Princeton require 3 SATIIs. You don’t seem to be science or engineering type but a lot of schools also require 1 science SATII for science/engineering school within the university like Cornell.

Well, none of the schools I’m applying to require 3 SAT IIs or within any subject so I’m fine for that. Do you think a 690 would be a huge detriment to my application? I mean its only 10 points below a 700…

No, not detrimental, but I don’t see the harm in trying to improve it. 670 math SATI seems like it’s going to be very easy for you to improve substantially given that you already got 780 math2c. If you can do what strosfan suggest, take SAT and SATII again first two sittings of next fall. Use the summer to study to make sure you get better scores.

bump…

My suggestion is take the ACT and SAT II – that way, if you score well in the ACT, you can turn in the ACT score in lieu of SAT-I. You can take the Nov and Dec SAT in case this strategy doesn’t work and send the scores to your schools. At least in some schools this should be fine even if you are doing ED – if regular decision, then you might even be able to take the test in Jan and make it in time.

And prepare well for the SAT IIs – not preparing can hit you hard.

My scores –
ACT composite (33)
PSAT (220)
CGPA (3.85 unweighted, 5.5 weighted)
Top 5% in competitive high school
SAT I –> M-700, CR-650, W-770, Essay - 11/12
SAT II –> Literature-700, MathII-650, Physics-580

agree with strosfan. Highers is ALWAYS better. Your goal is not 700 for the Ivies, but 750+…
