Hey all. I need to register for something for the May SAT tests and I can't decide between the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests. I'm expecting a 2000+ for my March score, but the combined math/verbal score for my top choice school (UVA) probably isn't high enough and I will most likely retake.

However the point has been made that if I take subject tests in May, I'll be well-off, having reviewed for the AP Exams for those respective tests. I'm planning on taking:
English Lit
Chemistry
US History

I've heard Lit is hard, but I'm pretty good with CR (700+), my history exam scores are generally very high. Chemistry, I would need a good amount of review as I'm not really a math/science "person."

Already studied for the SAT I, I can easily pick up where I left off. Mostly it's the math that gives me trouble, so studying would consist chiefly of reviewing math concepts. Any advice?

Take both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The SAT I is probably one of the most important things that a college looks for, so make sure you have an optimum score. As for SAT II, don't leave out Math I or II. If you're good in math, skip Math I and go directly to MAth II, otherwise do both.

^ You've got it all wrong. Take subject tests that correspond with the AP exams you're taking, and take them in May. It forces you to study relatively ahead of time for the AP exam (which is more important), and just trust me when I say that you're not going to want to be studying for it after the AP exam.

Sample case: I took the USH exams in may, and got a 740 and a 4. The rest of my class took the SAT II in June, didn't study because they felt finished with the class, and got < 700

Thanks UnleashedFury, yeah I was thinking that taking it in May would help with the AP's and with the SAT II's I'd basically be looking over both concepts.

Erasmus, is it really important to take a Math SAT II? My parents want me to take one SAT II in each subject and then take Latin; I honestly don't think I'd do well in Math I or II without substantial review. So my question is, will a Math Subject Test make or break me?

Taking five SAT Subject Tests will not, I think, be lost on colleges when they look your transcript over; if you score well that is. Take them in May, go out and get test prep and start reviewing right away. What math are you in? You might wait until next semester for math if that's the concern, don't take it now if you aren't confident you'll get 650+

If you're a junior, you'll be in AP Lang, correct? AP Lang prep is not sufficient for SAT Lit

Yeah I'm in Lang. I heard SAT Lit is a lot like the CR on the SAT, which i usually beast. What's different? Also i'm in precalc w/trig and i'll be in calculus ab next year, but that doesn't exactly make me want to take the Math II haha. But yeah so I guess I'll take them in May and then take the SAT one last time in June. Btw, what SAT IIs have you guys above taken and, if you don't mind, what were your scores?

For even the most prestigious colleges you only need 3 SATIIs... so why would you take 5? Maybe if you like taking tests, but to me, it's just plain stupid.

as for the may/june thing, it's simply a matter of personal preference. I feel that I'm the type of person who would score better after reviewing the topics in June, especially because I'm only taking 2 SATIIs (Chem and Math II).

Also, I'm in precalc right now, so if I took the Math II in May, I'd have another test to study for. As for Chemistry, I'd really like to take it one test at a time. I don't like taking 2 different types of test with 2 different formats in such close proximity to one another.

Paved88: US History - 740, Literature - 780, Latin - 700, Chem - 720

But yea Bigb14 is right, taking 5 is a bit excessive unless you really want to prove something to colleges. I didn't need to take Latin and Chem, but I got a dismal grade in AP Chemistry and i wanted to make anyone looking at transcript know that i wasn't just awful at the subject.
