SAT II Biology May 2009 Discussion

I put only respiration occurring.

I think the O2 was from the H2O that was split???

and i thought bmr was the dependent variable… cus temp was independent (the experimenter was changing it…) while bmr was dependent on the temp

can’t linked genes only happen on sex chromosomes?
why doesn’t the dark plant have calvin cycle?

For the starling question control question, I thought it would be the use of a chemical to disperse and control the population. It seemed less extreme than killing them with a virus and more efficient that catching and relocating. Did anyone put this answer?

BMR was dependent.

And the question asked for what was continuously occurring, which would have to be Respiration only, right?

25or6to4 - chemical is probably the worst option. look at DDT - it would have a disastrous effect on other ecosystems, and possibly lead to disease in humans

does anyone know the cyanide plant question?

yea…i put respiration only as well…this test was soo hard…it was nothing like what I had studied. Gosh…im prolly gonna get a 600. I picked trapping and relocating…but I guess that’s probably wrong.

Dole…chemical doesn’t have to mean DDT…it could have just been a starling pheramone or something…that’s what i thought at least.

i put A for the cyanide one, the choice where it would grow continuously in a frost-free environment because its cells would not burst with cynaide, thereby killing it. i dunno, if im right, but it seemed like the best option at the time.

yeah does anyone else know about the cyanide one? i put A also about it would grow with the areas without frost but i’m not confident. It was e section. help?

aspiringfor2400, that’s also what i put because it seemed to make the most sense, but the question wanted an evolution-based answer. that’s why i’m doubting it.

and 25or6to4, I know that chemical doesn’t have to be DDT - but I was using DDT as a case study. It was brought in to control mosquito populations and prevent malaria, but it had disastrous effects on ecosystems and it could cause damage to humans. the point is that chemicals are a bad option because their long term biological effects (impact on ecosystems and human health) may not be entirely predicted.

and for the starling one i put …put in a competivie species i think that was most logical

also what about the liver one…the only thing it does not do. was that produce red blood cells?

also does anyone remember the questions for the lab with like…how did she know that her breath had co2 or something? does anyone remeber the tube numbers?

for the liver question… it does not produce red blood cells (bone marrow does)
mabel92 your right

the liver one: i put that it didn’t change ammonia into urea, or something.
it was tubes 6 and 7

what did you guys put for the homologous structures question??? I knew the first one was the human hand…but what about the rest?

I don’t see how introducing an exotic species helps with the starling problem, because if that new exotic species is competing for resources with the starling, then it will become an invasive species once the starlings are gone (the goal is to preserve North America’s native birds).

A virus specific to starlings would wipe out the invasive species, which allows the North American birds to survive, so I said virus

okay and there was another tube questoin…it was like…2 and 5? or 3 and 5? i dont remember does anyone remember details for that one? i was stuck

uhm msmalik 428 the other ones were 2 and 3 for flying…and 1 for swimming.

1 for swimming…crap…i put two for swimming…i think; which means i messed up the other question…arrgh. Do you guys think the curve for this one will be big…??
