How similar are these tests in terms of the material they cover? I made a 5 in AP Chemistry but I forgot to take the SAT II. I am taking the SAT II this October...

could be VERY hard or VERY easy. It’s almost all memorization. acids/bases, solution colors, flame colors, etc.

I haven’t taken any chemistry classes for over a year, and when I did take it a year ago, it was just an honors chemistry class. I got B+ both semesters (my teacher sucks, I got around 91% each semester, but our class is 92%+ for an A :(.)

Anyways, I reviewed the Sparknotes book. Trust me, get the Sparknotes book and review it. Even if you find that u know everything in it, it’s worth it. But make sure to learn EVERYTHING in it! Sparknotes is one AWESOME book.

Anyways, I got 760, not bad for having taken only 1 non-AP chemistry class over a year ago. =)

I took AP Chem and got a 4 (at the time I didn’t know that) and chose not to take the SAT II in Chem. This was because that one question type (statement 1 is correct, statement 2 is correct, correct explanation, etc.) completely threw me and I didn’t have enough time to fully study.

I tutored a friend of mine who took Honors Chem in 10th grade, Physics in 11th, and the Chem SAT II the summer after her junior year. She was a pretty good Chem student and managed to get a 730 on the Chem SAT II with a lot of studying.

So I would say if you were good at Chem, and if you have 3-4 weeks to hardcore study, and if your diagnostic tests look good, then go for it.

Where can I find study sheets or lists of the different flame colors and solution colors I need to know?

took AP chemistry this year (got a 5) and took the SAT II in May (790).
Sparknotes AP book covers the material pretty well. Gas laws, solutions and laws of thermodynamics commonly appeared (especially on the statement questions- statement 1, statement 2, etc); Le Chatelier’s principle is another common one. Know your theory among those subjects, and be able to tie things together among them.

Take the sparknotes practice SAT II test, and focus on the areas of study that they highlight for you. If you miss one question on flame colors, that won’t hurt your score badly.
If it worries you, just look at the periodic table for general trends: alkali metals for example, are an approximate rainbow going down. Lithium- red, sodium- yellow. Etc. That can give you a good estimate.

In general, the SAT II focuses on general theory. Don’t stress over specific questions like that. Sparknotes.com is your best friend in preparation :)

The AP is definitely harder, but there’s also more room for mistakes because its longer. I agree about the Sparknotes book. I studied using that for the SAT II and there was very little, if anything, that the book didn’t cover.

The part that is the hardest is the statement questions for sure! I’d save some extra time for those.

which prep book is the best for chemistry

The SATII is not as straightforward as the AP Test. You MUST look at a few practice tests first. The format will definitely throw you on the first time or so, as others have said.

And if I recall, stuff like solid or flame colors was not one question, but rather something like 5. They give you a list of molecules and a list of colors and you have to match them. After a few practice tests and some studying, you should have a pretty good idea of what the flame or precipitate or whatever colors are.

I need to take a Chem or Physics SAT II for some schools…like Carnegie. I’m going to be a senior taking AP Physics, so can’t take that. Took AP Environmental Junior Yr (got 5 on AP exam). I took Chem. Honors sophomore year…but now senior year I have to take 3 SATIIs.
Probably will do Math 1 or 2, History (5 on AP Hist). But not sure how well I can do on the Chemistry and what books I should study. ACT score 32; 34 math, 36 reading (29 science, which is like 96 percentile). (Has 5 on AP Art, but only 4 on AP Engl.)

I am in Differential Calc this summer so I may take Math 2.

My highschool is weaker on the sciences, so I don’ t think starting Physics senior year will be too helpful

CHEMISTRY: What should I study? At least it is multiple choice. I probably need a pretty high score for the schools i want to apply to. I am a good reader, should I study a text book or start with prep book.

The Sparknotes…was it the SATII Chemistry book alone, or the one that has multiple types (History/Chem/Math, etc.) in one book?
