I just finished intensive studying for Chemistry AP and took the exam. How is it compared to the SAT II version? What are some of the main differences between the two (like materials covered and such)?

I was going to take the SAT II but i ended up chickening out. Then again my teacher didn't prepare us very well at all....I ended up pretty much just self studying for like 5 nights before the exam to try and learn everything

if you did well on AP chemistry, you will definitely be fine for SAt II chemistry. the topics covered in both are about the same, except SAT II chemistry is easier, but you might want to look over some descriptive chemistry for SAT II chemistry if you are not good with it.

as long as you still remember everything you learned for AP chemsitry, you will be fine for SAT II chem

In terms of the test itself, the AP MC section is very similar to SAT2. Its a little bit more math-intensive than the AP, but thats really only limited to stoich/gas laws. Also, the material on SAT 2 is much less in depth, and it doesn't really include acid-base/reaction kinetics/electrochem/solubility much (on the May test it had almost nothing).

I second JY's comment. If you think you did well on the AP chem test, SAT2 will be a piece of cake.

Yep, focus on stoichimetry and descriptive chem. Not so much on equilibrium, electro, acid-base etc (which is a shame, because I'm better at those lol)

um barricade, i studied VERY hard for the AP chem test too... and i just took a practice SAT test... hmm in my opinion, the SAT 2 chem test isnt really hard. I mean, the math questions are joke. There isnt much tricky stuff on there except the BECAUSE problems.. other than that, most questions are straight forward memorization.

Just because you do well in an AP class/test, doesn't necessarily mean you will ace the SATs in that subject.

I'm doing really well in my AP Bio class, and I think I did fairly well on the AP test as well, however, i got a 630 on the SAT in Bio. I thought i would be more than prepared, but it wasn't like that. The test covered a lot of basic material I hadn't gone through since freshman year. I recommend taking as many practice tests as possible. Don't go with the assumption that being in AP Chem will make you be in good shape no matter what.

hm touche my friend

i got an 800 on the SAT2 Chem. on the FR on the AP Chem I missed 1 question (1 point) (divided wrong). I know this b/c I wrote my answers in my green booklet and went over them later that week in class.

However, I did not ever once score an 800 on any SAT2 practice test and I took close to 10, maybe more. my highest was a 780 but my avg score hoovered around 730-720

which practice tests did you use? PR, CB, Kaplan? Which do you think were the hardest?

I took 11 practice tests: 3 PR, 4 Kaplan, 3 SN, 1 CB

In order of difficulty - SN, Kaplan, PR, CB (easiest)
My scores ranged from 610 (SN) to 770 (CB). I also never got an 800 on a practice test.

800 on the real thing.

took 1 practice sparknotes test for chem sat II, got 650 on it

got around 80% on ap test FR

got 770 on real sat II

780, 730, 720 PR

730 CB

740 Kaplan

700,710 Sparknotes

800 Real Thing

I got a 720 on the SATII chem test. I thought it was very easy. It was a lot more general concepts regarding stoichiometry and stuff. There weren't any equilibrium or many thermodynamics problems. I didn't even wish that I had an equation sheet. I took the test in 45 minutes... It was just myself and the proctor left so that was awkward.

I think I did well on the chem AP (either a 4 or a 5), but it was definitely a lot more difficult than the SAT II.

What score do you think would be a conversion from a 4 on the AP exam? Also, I feel like I did better on the FRQ on the AP than the MC section, will this be a problem? Did you actually go out and buy PR,CB,Kaplan,Sparknotes for SATII prep or did you somehow get ahold of them? Which do you suggest I get if I need to pay for one?

Thanks

Wow, is the sparknotes really that much tougher? I guess I should be very pleased with a 740 on my first one haha.

Thanks guys, I felt I did okay on the AP this year (decent on MC, pretty confident on FR). I guess I'll start spot studying now if its really descriptive chem heavy. Too bad there's no rate or equilibrium haha, those are my strong sections in chem. Got my hands on library PR Chem SAT II today, its a lot thinner than the AP one. Hopefully thats a good sign

There ARE some rate and equilibrium, but it's not sophisticated.

And innervisions - I never got a score about 700 on Sparknotes and I got an 800 on the real thing :P
