SAT II Chemistry

After searching this forum, I really never found a clear consensus on what exactly the best preparatory book for SAT II Chemistry is?

What do you guys suggest?

Barron’s is very comprehensive, albeit dense, accurate with the practice tests and I think and overall good resource for SAT chem. Stuff like PR is too under-prep.

:O. I just finished PR in three days, and I thought the book was lacking some information as well. What about Kaplan? Anybody?

I used my PR for AP Chem to study for the SAT II and got an 800.

^

You used the AP Chem prep book?

I studied for the AP with PR (but also read the textbook so PR was a good review) and then the day before the subject test, did 2 of the 3 tests in the PR for SAT Chem book. Are you taking AP Chem? If not, then I don’t think PR is enough.

Tentatively speaking, yes, I will be taking AP Chemistry next year. I actually just finished a practice test in PR and scored a 720 (this is just with my chemistry H knowledge). A lot of people say that I should just wait till the class is over to take the test, but I will be extremely busy come the end-of-the-school-year, so I will prefer to take it in November.

What did you score abc12311580?

Any other tips and advice would be great!

Wait, what grade are you going into? If you are a rising junior, I would wait, I know its busy at the end of the year (I just finished junior year) but a higher score is worth it. If you finish the AP curriculum, it’ll place less stress on you and the test honestly wont be stressful or hard because I think its between honors and AP level. Unless you have another 3 subject tests you want to take in may/june, I would wait. I scored an 800 btw and I did no extra studying for the SAT II besides looking over some T/F/CE but I studied hard for the AP

Ok, thank you for the help. I think I might wait it out. :D

If you’re planning on taking AP Chemistry, I’d definitely wait to take the subject test. There’s usually one date scheduled in between the two AP testing weeks, so if that works for you, you can study for both at once. Honestly, I think with two years of chemistry under your belt, provided you understand the concepts and remember how to do simple calculations, you shouldn’t need much review. Definitely do some practice tests though

Thank you very much quickster94! I would just rather prefer doing things earlier so I don’t have to “put it all on the line” on the last few testing dates before I apply to college. Better safe than sorry.

got a 780 after taking ap chem and using pr for the day before reviewing. So, PR is effective I would say

It seems like taking AP Chem automatically guarantees a 750+ score on the SAT II. Would anyone vouch for that?

Guarantees? I wouldn’t say that much. Some people in my AP Chem class wouldn’t be able to get a 700, let alone a 750. If you actually try in AP Chem, then you should be pretty safe but just by taking AP Chem you guarantee yourself nothing

Yes, that’s what I meant.

i agree with loseyourself…if you study hard for the ap exam (like hard enough to get at least a 4) then youre practically guaranteed a 750+ score :)

Thanks for your help laptop1. I’ll probably just take the test whenever I feel ready. :D

@LoseYourself, I took the chem sat with absolutely no studying and got a 750.
I did try in AP chem but got a 3 on the AP test :/

^

Oh ok! Thanks for sharing. Since you tried, I’m guessing the 3 has something to do with the rigor of the course and the teacher?

This thread is moving more towards how studying for the AP Chem test benefits you for the SAT Chem test. I would like some more opinions based purely on the SAT Subject Test (Chem) books which you have used.

Most people say PR is under prep whereas I’ve been using it for the past 2 days (am at Radioactivity at the moment) and it seems pretty decent to me.

Any comments?
