SAT II Chinese

I am a non-native Speaker, and caucasian. My first time ever being exposed to Chinese was freshman year, and since then, I have advanced to Mandarin 3H, and will be going to China this summer to work for 5 weeks. I got a 750 on the practice test, and am confident I can score 770+ when I get back from China.

But, I heard that colleges don't really like the SAT II Chinese because even if I get an 800, I will still be in roughly the 56th percentile because of all the native speakers that take it. So, should I just take a different one in lieu of the Chinese? I have worked my butt off these three years, and don't want Colleges to blow off a really good score because of the native speakers >.<

I always wonder about the same question. Like you, I’ve been working my butt off on Chinese. I heard if you get 750 you are in 4 percentile. That’s terrible! That’s probably because there are so many people in China and even in this country there’re many native Chinese speakers. We can’t compete with them. However, does the college value our ability even though we are not as good as native speakers? It’s kind of depressing. I’m also having the same kind of dilema with French. I would like to take a FL SATII. But no matter what there are native speakers who are better than us. So is it worthwhile? Some suggested if I could do better in, say, math, I should forget about FL. My GC disagrees because I want to do international relations, etc. She thinks even if I get 50% as long as it’s above 750 I should do a FL.

Please comment!!

I would probably take the Chinese test anyway, but only if you’re confident you’ll get an 800. Colleges should know that a perfect score is a perfect score despite your actual percentile and give you credit for taking it and scoring high. You can find actual perecentiles (for 2008) here: http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/sat_subject_tests_percentile_ranks_2008.pdf

a 750 on the Chinese SAT II is about the 23rd percentile.

I certainly can’t be sure of a 800 in either language. probably beter in Frech than in chinese. …sorry thiskeyboard drives me craz.!!!

im sure that at least for privates, a 770-780 on the chinese sat for a white guy would look pretty good
