SAT II for Language Placement versus Placement Test at School

Isn't there also a placement test at school for language during the first week?? Is it essential that one take the SAT II?

Anyone? Please?

It's closer to the AP Spanish Literature test, and it you can get Span 9 credit for it.

It's multiple choice.

What's your recommendation as to which one to take? My son took Spanish 4 Honors junior year and hasn't taken any Spanish since then. He's freaking at the idea of taking the SAT II in a week, when he's got three AP tests the following week.

Should he (a) take the SAT II on May 5 with minimal study? (b) Take the SAT II test on June 2, with maybe a little bit more study? or (c) take the placement test on campus in the Fall?

Which option will be easiest and potentially give him the most advanced placement?

Not essential to take the subject test, but it could make the summer more fun -- no need to prep for the on-campus language test. Pickup a CB subject test book and take a practice test to see how he does. A 690 is required to fulfill the language requirement, which is AP caliber in our HS since the language dept is not as strong as other departments. Take the test in June if he feels strong.

It doesn't hurt to try the SATII. If the score is below 690, then try again freshman week.

Refreshing this thread because he took the SAT II in May and got a 620 --

Placement-wise, what does this do for him? Does anyone know??

You would be placed into French or Spanish 3. One 10 week course and your language requirement would be fulfilled. You can take the placement course freshman week and try to get out of the language requirement altogether.

This doesn't answer your question at all, but it may be helpful to someone else:

I talked to someone in the French department during Dimensions, and this is what she said:

A score of 690 or above on the Subject Test fulfills the language requirement and allows you to place out of French 3.

A sufficiently high score on a placement test given during Orientation allows you to place out of French 8.

A sufficiently high score on a second placement test given during orientation to those who have passed the first one allows you to receive credit for French 10 (this is supposed to be very rare).

I don't know how it works in other languages, but I'd imagine they have similar arrangements.

Looking at that above................

If you score 690 or higher, do you still have to take the placement test if you are plan on continuing that particular language be it French or Spanish, in order to be placed out of French 8 or Spanish 8.

Yes, if you don't take the placement test, you'll be placed in french 8 if you choose to continue.

I got a 5 Spanish Lit... which Spanish class is hawt? It seems I can go into either Spanish 30, 31, or 32. is that true?
