Hey guys,

So my parents persuaded me back in 2010, when I took the SAT IIs in my sophomore year, to utilize the 4 free score reports. I sent one to WUSTL. I took the Math II and the World History SAT II tests in which I got a 790 on Math II but an abysmal 570 on my World History test. AP World History was not offered at my school, but there was World History Honors (SAT IIs mostly correlate with AP classes?) I also got a 790 on Bio E and a 730 on Chem (that I do not know whether I should report or not) this year in January. Obviously, I can't take my World History score back. I got a 4 on my APUSH test this year as a junior; does that sort of alleviate it?

So my main question is: should I bother applying to ED?

Fyi, my ECs are good and my percentile is top 5%.

I think your 700+ Math, Bio and Chem scores are fine and are worth reporting. The 570 on World History is very minor and won’t break your application: “Washington University does not require SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II: College Board Achievement Tests). However, if you do take them and submit your scores, we will only consider them if they strengthen your application.” It shouldn’t deter you from applying ED if that’s what you decide.

Honestly, you shouldn’t worry about it. From the FAQ section of the undergraduate admissions website:

"Do I need to take any of the SAT Subject Tests (SAT IIs) to apply to Washington University?

Washington University does not require SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II: College Board Achievement Tests). However, if you do take them and submit your scores, we will only consider them if they strengthen your application."

So, since the World History score certainly doesn’t strengthen your application, it shouldn’t matter that much. Admissions officers realize that students’ nerves act up, resulting in one or two abysmal test scores. Of course, you could always email or call the admissions office and voice your concern, but still, I think it really isn’t that big of a deal. If you did contact them, at least it’d show them that you really are concerned about your application and want to have the best possible image presented. Good luck!

If I retook my 780 (which was already sent) and scored a 790 and sent that, would WUSTL reject me because I would be seen as a test-taking freak?

I was going to quote what cowboycliche quoted :). Hopeful2013, I don’t think so. You should be fine (see post above about strengthening app^^). I definitely wouldn’t take it a 3rd time though.

I hope to see you at WUSTL in 2012
(or 2013? can I ask why you chose the number 2013 in your username? lol)

I also got a 4 on APUSH and got in. I never took the World History SAT II. I would imagine they’d ignore it after seeing your other 700+s and the fact that you never took AP. I mean, the fact that you never took AP isn’t exactly an excuse, but your other 700s show you’re clearly qualified. People make mistakes and they know that.

Hopeful: They won’t reject you for being a test-taking freak. Whatever they do think will only harm your application, and not benefit you in any way however (which doesn’t mean a reject, but will do more harm). Any harm would be minimal though so if it means so much to you, have at it.

^… so it will harm? :O

Slightly – it won’t get you rejected if you were going to be accepted, but it might be the difference when choosing people off the waitlist, just don’t send in the old score or better yet, just don’t bother.
To many it comes off as arrogance. Spend time on things that can help you.

What should I do if I already sent that old score? >.< I took the test without AP knowledge, then tried again with the knowledge from taking the AP class.

How will that work out on the CommonApp?

If you’ve already done it, don’t bother worrying about it. Again, it’s minor and others may look at it differently. If you sent in the 780 I personally wouldn’t send in a 790 but it’s up to you. Most likely no one will even care, but I don’t see it helping - especially when cutting from 27k to 4k apps or whatever and any reason is good enough to remove someone.
