What exactly is the difference between the SAT II Lit exam and the CR section of the SAT??? In my mind, they seem as to be the same thing, just as Math I and SAT Math are similar.

Critical Reading answers the question, "Can this person read, understand and correctly interpret English?"

Literature answers the question, "Is this person ready for the in-depth literary analysis of a college freshman English class?"

Honestly, I've taken both, and Lit is MUCH harder. I'd say it's more like SAT Math and the SAT II Math II. Way more advanced topics.

the lit test is SICK.Definitely the hardest SAT 2 subject test.

If you like analyzing poetry than take the lit test, otherwise I would get away from it

My own scores:

CR: 740
Lit: 500

They are definitely very different tests. I wasn't able to deal with having so much analysis in so little time, so my lit score is quite low.

BTW DUDE, I suppose you've intensively studied every single subject for which there is a SAT II available, and then taken the tests for each, so that you can make a statement like "the hardest SAT 2 subject test."

SAT: 740
Lit: 680

SAT only tests your comprehension of modern English prose. Lit tests more than that. You have to be able to understand poetry, as well as pieces written in an older English style. It also tests some basic literary terms. They aren't hard though.

If you've had a lot of exposure to different literature and poetry from different eras, you probably won't have much trouble with lit. But if you're accustomed to only reading the NY Times or other things modern, you'll have difficulty with some of the passages.

perplex- i have taken practice tests. Chem, physics, math and french are not hard. Excluding the languages(which one has to know how to speak in order to take the test),Lit is the hardest-hands down.

can it compare with the AP English Literature and Composition exam?

i guess im staying away from this exam

is Math IIC, Chemistry, (and US for schools that require 3) diverse enough?

i never took AP english, I suck at english, I dont really enjoy reading, I had a 650 in the CR section of the SAT and I took the SAT II Lit and got a 700.

sat I CR: 800
lit: 730

I'd say lit is definitely hard. Lit and CR are not really related, CR is at the most a tip-toe-no poems-etc version of lit. Lit requires more analysis, which gets even harder due to time constraints. I enjoy reading, but not poetry, but I managed to work my way through the test.

smder99- maybe check out a practice test of the lit exam before ruliong it out of your list, who knows, you might find it easier that you think.

Personally I believe that you can do well on this test if you practice and study. I used the PR book, went over the first few pages ( mostly BS) and then did the 2 practice tests ( which I feel definitely helped). I guess if someone had more time, and will power hehe, they could study more and do a lot better.

To me they seemed very similar, though SAT II Lit had questions that dug a bit deeper than SAT I CR as well as some more challenging passages. SAT II Lit is actually almost exactly the same as AP Lit. Same format, same types of questions and works... etc... If you do well on the AP, you'll do well on SAT II Lit.

(800 CR, 800 SAT II Lit, 5 AP Lit)

yeah, lit is pretty hard.

oddly though, my scores are SATI CR- 670, SATII Lit-710.

go figure.

i'm retaking SATI and aiming for a 740 for CR.

^^ i hear you. my score for sat 1CR- 680, SAT ii lit- 740.. i think i just had the jitters when i took the SAT for the first time. i'm also taking the SAT again cuz i know i can do wayy better on CR.

yeah, i agree.

the SAT for that first time was like a whirlwind. i felt better taking the SAT2. hopefully, i can get a 750 for CR in oct. :)

Brian I'm hoping I get 750 for my CR too...hopefully you and me can both hit that mark!

you and me both, etti.

To all those taking the Lit test, I'd suggest that even though its a very subjective test, and your score varies to a good degree upon how comfortable you are with the extracts you get, you should still attempt a few practice tests and if you get your hands on it, the Real SAT Lit test, to get you familiarized with the question type.
Your score, depends to a large degree, I suppose upon how good you are at thinking outside the box, particularly with regard to the post modernist poetry that you sometimes get. A good CR score is also normally indicative of your potential for a high score in Lit.
My scores:
CR:800, Lit:770

790 CR (june 05)
750 Lit (june 06) -> after a year of AP Lang n Comp
