SAT II Literature

I am thinking of taking Literature SAT II and get a 750+ and Math 2c this weekend.

I didn't sign up for Literature but I did pretty well on the verbal on SAT I so I figure I can try my luck. ;)

Can someone give me a general overview of the test? What is tested? How is it compare to critical reading on SAT I? I will probably just take two practice tests beforehand. Is that enough prep?

If you did well on SAT I CR, you'll do awesome on Lit. The Lit test is essentially the SAT I CR except the questions are more analytical and they require you to extrapolate more from the passages. But because of this, the Lit also has a much nicer curve. The best way to prep is to take practice tests... 2 should be good... take more if you can... I think for this test there is a direct relationship between practice and performance. The more tests you take, the better prepared you will be.

Good luck!

Actually, the Lit. test is very different from the CR in my experience. I got a 710 on the CR and a 540 (ouch) on the Lit.; there is a LOT of poetry and you need to know your poetry devices (verse, meter, etc.). This is what killed me-I am pretty good at interpreting passages, but the poems threw me for a loop because I assumed it was a variation of the CR test.

yeah you'll definitely have to work with poetry... but that's why I suggest taking plenty of practice tests (I used Barron's...which btw wasn't a very good representation of the actual thing...it focuses way too much on literary terms. But still, it got me used to reading lit-style passages). I actually didnt find that you needed to know much about meter/rhyme/literary terms at all... from my memory, it was all interpretation...they dont test on any esoteric terms though at least (mostly the usual like hyperbole, metaphor, simile, etc.).

haha ummm yeah the lit test has the worst curve besides math ic

its damn hard

750 on verbal, 680 on lit, its a pretty damn subjective test

wow. thats weird. I got a 730 on CR and 770 on Lit.

i have a 740 CR...

was getting 750+'s on all my practice lit exams...

and I just found out i got a 640 Lit.

I didn't get to the last 4 problems, I was stressed, I don't know what happened...

I have totally just screwed myself over, haven't I? (applying to ivies/privates

I'm taking the test tomorrow. Please tell me the curve is good...

the curve is good. basically, you can get a raw 45 out of 60 and still get a 700.

And tawny, why dont you retake it in Dec? I bombed math and that's what I'm doing...Just practice a lot for the Dec test and you'll be fine, considering you obviously have the CR skills.

Is the Lit curve pretty consistent in that range then?

yeah. don't stress it. take your time on the passages, absorb them, move steadily through the questions, omit as few as possible, and you'll be fine.

Good luck!

Thanks, Son of Liberty. :)

Good luck to everyone else who's taking that dreadful test too!

i think the lit test was really easy.
i only got a 660 on cr, but a 740 on lit
really weird

One more thing...

I've heard that the Barron's Prep book isn't the most realistic when it comes to the style of the SAT II Literature test. If so, are the Barron's Qs harder or easier than the actual ones? And what would a 48-52 average in Barron's most likely predict for the real test?

Edit: Yan Ling, what was ur raw score?

Yeah barron's isnt very accurate for the real test. it focuses way too much on the rhetorical devices/strategies. Its analytical questions are pretty okay though. I dont think there's any real correlation between how u perform on barron's and the actual thing though. But for what it's worth your score range is pretty much the same is mine. I think I scored 48 on 3 practice tests in a row...and I scored lower on the other ones I took.

And you got a 770 on the actual test, that gives me hope. I will certainly try my best. Right now I'm just trying NOT to focus on Barron's ODing of literary terms. I'm sure u need to know the most common ones, though, right? Ex. similie, metaphor, alliteration, etc. I'm just trying to get my brain into the Lit mode right now by reading passages. >.<

too bad i'm applying early...

740 CR and a 640 Lit... ridiculous.

yeah. the one literary term I remember was "ironic hyperbole," used to describe the particular usage of a phrase in the given passage. But yeah... I can't remember any other literary terms/devices questions. And even if they appeared on the test, they must have been obvious because I would have remembered it if it was a difficult question. Get plenty of sleep tonight... you'll work better with a clear mind. And don't worry... it sounds like you're gonna do awesome!

Once again, thanks for the encouragement Son of Liberty. I really appreciate it. :)
