Sat Ii Literature

So throughout this summer, I've gone through the Barrons and PR books for literature, and I still suck (really really bad) at it.. like low 600s. It's weird cos Im way better at the actual SAT CR and AP Eng readings. :(

For those who have succeeded in this test or who are just plain good at literature, got any advice?

I always 'think' i understood the passage, but I didn't. Also, those dialogue/play reading sections always kill me. blehh. help!

Those are both pretty good books...if you can't figure out how to raise your score, I'd take a different SAT II. Or do you have to take the lit one?

I would suggest you don't take any practice test for 3-4 weeks. Read literature texts (the sort you think you have trouble in) of good quality. Read chapter by chapter, think, and analyze them. Try to identify the literary techniques used, especially those frequently tested in the sat 2 lit test, and write them down on a piece of paper. Then think how does those convey the theme, or point of view of the author, and how those enhance the overall reading experience. Read each dialogue/line that seems unusual or important and analyze them with respect to the context of the story. I am sure you will gradually become adept at it. And then refer to websites such as sparknotes.com which have very good analysis of good literary texts. See where you are deficient at and work on that area. Then once you think you are confident enough, take two practice tests and see if your score increases or not. If it doesn't then you will have to seriously think about another subject test. Best of luck.

I honestly didn't find that practice test scores correlated to my actual exam score. The Barrons prep book has good practice tests and questions which are really difficult, but explain how to arrive at the correct answer. The best prep you can do is to read a lot, and analyze what you read, especially poetry.

^ What did you get on Barrons and on the real thing?

lolcats4 how come you're everywhere??? lol

I think on a realllly old thread someone recommended this novel on how to read literature. I dont know where that thread went though..
I didnt read it b.c its like 200 pgs or something and if it doenst work i'd be ****ed

Lows 600s is like good considering how stupid that test is. colleges now that it's retarded

Snowflakes00, I believe you're referring to How to Read Literature Like a Professor--someone who scored 800 on the SAT Literature recommended it, right? I borrowed that book just to see what it was like, but it didn't help me at all. That book might be good for improving your literature analysis skills over time, but it's not really a big help for the SAT (in my opinion).
