SAT II: Literature

Hi everyone! What would be the best way to prepare for the SAT II Literature test? I've heard mixed responses about its difficulty, and I'm not sure which book / method to use in order to achieve a high score. I am currently studying British Literature, and I've been studying English Literature for the past two yeras of high school. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Bump........

there's really nothing you can do. I know of 7 ppl who have taken the test. I did, and it took me two tries just to break 700. My friend, who took it in one try and achieved a 780. Another friend, who took it once so far and got a 630. A senior in my high school who got a 790. Two other ppl i know who both got 740's. and another who got a 660 so far. All of these save one took it without studying. the only thing you can do to prep is build your self-confidence.

Thanks a lot, jonnypins. Your reply helped a lot, and the numbers sound comforting as well. :) Anyone else who would like to add something to this post?

Like jonnypins said, there really isn't anything you can do to study effectively. You sound like you are well prepared with 4 years of Lit class. Good luck!

On another note, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to start a thread. How did you do it? Thanks!

THe test has a lot of poetry passages, so it would help to review some poetry concepts and terms. That's about all you can do.

jaimie17,
There is a white button that says "New Thread" above the forum posts but below the "featured discussions". It is to the left of the moderators' names.

Haha... I was gonna help jaimie17 out, but ampersand was quick to respond. Thanks jaimie17, MomofWildChild and ampersand (for helping jaimie). I guess this test can't really be "prepared" after all.

Anyone else want to add anything about the SAT II Literature test?

Have you taken the SAT I yet? In my experience, your CR score is a reasonable indicator of how well you will perform on the Lit test. Also, try the sample literature questions on collegeboard.com and see how you fare.

Thanks to both ampersand and LegendoftheWarrior, I did finally manage to figure it out :) . I did forget to mention earlier that, as MomofWildChild just mentioned, the test was made up almost entirely of poetry analysis.

I took the May SAT and got an 800 on the Critical Reading. I was also in AP English this year. Is this a fair indicator of how I will do on the SAT II Lit without studying?

Also, I was looking at the sample questions and was unsure of some terminology.

What exactly is a "main" verb?

Thanks

in simply sentences there may be only one 'main' verb such as:
the dog ATE the cat.

but other verbs can stand as 'helping verbs' in a sentence that is more complex compared to a simple sentence...such as:
I have been sick.
been is the main verb (to be) but the helping verb is have. they will prob. give questions such as this to trick the test taker, so be on guard. Don't be freaked out by the terminology - the concepts behind the terminology are actually very easy to understand.
good luck!

What is an apostrophe? not the puncuation ', but like the tool used in lit

do you need to have all those devices (like synecdoche and dues ex machina) memorized for the lit test or just some of the basic ones (simile, metaphor etc)? I'm thinking about taking literature.

How does the AP Lang and comp's mc questions compare to those of the Sat II lit?

you don't need to know advanced terminology. just know your standard ones like alliteration and metaphor.

i think the difficulty level is pretty much on par with the english language and comp ap. i felt like i was continually choosing the best answer out of four equally good ones or four equally bad ones, but ended up doing fine. what will determine the difficulty level for someone may be how comfortable they are with poetry.

well take SAT II Lit when u take an AP English class.

could anyone give a score range for SAT II Lit w/ these scores:

SATI Reading: ~700
AP Comp MC: ~70%
