SAT II Literature

Those of you who beasted this test: How did you study? Did you even study at all (wing it)?

Is it possible to raise your score 100 points, or does it depend far too much on natural ability?

I’d like to know as well :)

I didn’t wing it, exactly, but I didn’t study too much for it either. The first time I took it, I was virtually unprepared save for the studying I did for AP English Language months before. The two multiple choice portions aren’t identical, but I think they require you to polish similar sets of skills.

Later, I bought a couple of books (Kaplan and McGrawHill) and tried problems, but didn’t finish either. I’m not sure how big a help they were material-wise, but I think it’s good to get in the habit of solving those type of MCQs. And I did the one Blue Book test.

Lit has the harshest curve out there, so I wouldn’t say that raising your score by a lot of points is impossible. Natural ability does play a big part, but it’s not everything. Or at least, it wasn’t for me.

The most helpful form of preparation for me was taking the actual test, so I could get used to the format.

(I got an 800 in the end btw)

I took a princeton review practice test in March or so and got a 590. I’m a big reader, especially of 19th century lit, so needless to say I was surprised by how low my score was. A month or so before the test I started studying heavily through the princeton review book (which isn’t very good) and eventually Barron’s - doing practice tests, reading the strategies, and getting a large smattering of all kinds of 16th-20th century prose and poetry. In June, after just that month of studying, my score ended up being a 750.

^This is very inspiring

Thanks for the replies guys <3
Anyone else have something to add?

Hey PaperCranes, I’m taking Lit as well- this November. How are you preparing?

^I took a practice test from the blue book, scored abysmally low, and bought Kaplan’s :)

EDIT: I’m a junior member now! Sweet <3

I maintain that there is no way to prepare for this test aside from reviewing some of the practice exams and previously issued tests. And be a good reader?

^What score did you receive?

10char

what is the blue book?

^The official collection of Collegeboard practice tests.

God! I scored a 530 on the last test that I took. It was from Peterson’s. GODGODGOD…

Is the blue book " The Official Guide for all SAT Subject Tests"?

Yes, that’s the one everyone is talking about.
