does a 770+ SAT II score make up for a bad grade in that subject (e. chem, bio, etc.)?

Depends on how “bad” of a grade. IMO a 770+ score in Chem for example could mean that a “B” earned in an AP Chem class was from a really tough class. An AP exam score would also be helpful in establishing the course rigor. Some teachers are brutal when grading and that is just life. I don’t think it can make up for a grade of D or less.

What if I got a 800 SAT II Chem and a C in the class?

If the rest of the your transcript is very strong (mostly A’s) and you had an AP score of 4/5 I would give you the benefit of the doubt. I am not an admissions counselor by any stretch but if the class was AP rigor or similar it would make me wonder what grading standard was establsihed. An 800 in Chem is like top 5 percent approximately so you obviously are strong in the subject.

On the other hand, if there are a lot of lower grades combined with high test scores, the admissions people may think that you are a “smart slacker” (not especially desirable).
