I was deferred from Wharton with a 740 on the Math 2... do you think it's worth retaking it?

If you are deferred even with such a high score, then the reason for deferment is probably unrelated to your score. Just relax and hope for the best.

yea i dont think your deferral has much to do with your SAT II Math score....they prolly just want to compare you with other RD applicants

I was deferred with an 800. Therefore, your 740 is probably not what stopped you from being accepted

a guy from my school last year got in with a 580 on it so..

i would disagree with ceebrown. A 740 is not a weak score. As long as your score is in that high range, Penn knows you are capable of doing the work at wharton. I would think they'd be more concerned with other, more personal, aspects. i.e. essays, recs, etc.

A 740 is probably fine... but eh, if you can 800 it next time, go for it. Math IIC 800's here at Penn are a dime a dozen, especially in Wharton.

unless you're a minority or otherwise hooked, then yeah, wharton is expecting an easy 800 on Math 2. a 740 is not bad, but your goal is to get accepted, correct?

i think ceebrown is a troll trying to scare people away from wharton.. just read his other posts. where did you pull these statistics out of? a 740 in the bottom 25%? LoL.

and no, the guy with a 580 wasn't strong in math at all.. quite the opposite.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if 740 was in the bottom 25%. I mean Wharton takes the cream of the crop right? I got a 790 on my Math 2c and I was in like the 87th Percentile overall, so considering they take very very qualified people, I would not be surprised the slightest if 740 was low for Wharton. You have to realize though, the people who take the 2c are really good at math.

Can you actually still retake and have them count it at this point? It seems pretty late to take them and still have your scores sent in.

Where did you find your source?

And no, I don't think 740 is a weak score.

ceebrown, I suppose this is why the wharton admit rate is around 10%. people don't understand what it takes to get in. they tell themselves "740 is pretty good" but wharton is not looking for "pretty good" they are looking for the best.

i'm not liking this thread.

do you really think admissions officers would say, "oh, we would take this person...but he got a 740 on math 2..reject."

I don't think it would even work the other way..."we should strongly consider this person BECAUSE of his 800 math 2."

And don't SAT 2 scores go by ranges anyway, like if you're in a certain range then you're good?

tnb19: No, an 800 Math IIC score wouldn't give anybody a golden ticket into Wharton. An 800 is usually like the 90th percentile out of all test takers. I wouldn't be surprised if, for Wharton, an 800 Math IIC score would be around the 50th-60th percentile, but I don't have the statistics for that.

It's just that the math on IIC isn't that difficult -- the math you actually use in Wharton is arguably harder, especially when it comes to problem-solving strategies (and the algebra is harder, and there is also quite a bit of calculus). Furthermore, the curve on the IIC itself is crazy because you can miss like 4-5 questions, get everything else right, and still get an 800. If someone didn't do well on the IIC, I'd seriously wonder if they'd be able to handle math in Wharton.

However, an 800 in any subject is not by any means required for Wharton, but I'd say a 740 is still pushing the lower end. It won't get you rejected but it won't help your acceptance, either.

My son is a Wharton graduate, accepted at ED and now works in a profession that Wharton students dream about.

ok, thanks legendofmax, your explanation makes a lot more sense.
