My Math teacher tells me the difference between Math I and Math II is that one is harder than the other but Math II has a very generous curve (because it's hard?). However, the colleges I'm looking at claim they're fine with either. Are they just saying that or does it truly not matter?

I didn't do very well in PreCalc so I'm a little nervous about Math II (but did pretty well in AB Calc)

I don’t know the exact answer, but I think it might matter if you are applying for certain majors, especially the ones in math/science. I also know some colleges recommend Math II.

I’m applying as either a Political Science major or an Economics major most likely.

Oh then I don’t think it will be that big of a deal if you just take Math I. But of course, if you think you can do well on Math II, definitely take Math II. Like you said, the curve is nicer, and many of the concepts are from pre-calc.

And from your username, are you thinking about Maryland?

Thanks!

Yep. I’m applying to other colleges too, but I doubt I’ll get into most of them…I’ll be attending Maryland most likely :)

If you are applying to the UCs, Math I is not accepted. If to Stanford, it recommends that if you submit a math it be the Math II. Otherwise colleges that require IIs accept either, except there might be a few exceptions if applying to a university’s engineering/science college which may want the Math II. Maryland neither requires nor recommends IIs so it makes no difference there.

Ya I’m not applying to either the UCs or Stanford. I’m applying to the College of Arts. I think I’ll just take Math I then…

Here are the stats: Higher Education Professionals | College Board;

Notice that 90K took I and 150K took II.

If you don’t score high on math I, it looks bad. If you do score well on Math I, then schools will wonder why you didn’t take math II. Hone your math skills and take Math II. Also, about 50% more score 800 on Math II than on SAT reasoning math.

I was told by a well-regarded college GC that there is no reason to take the Math 2 over Math 1 unless the applicant is majoring in math/science, engineering and perhaps economics/business.
