I took the SAT II for Chemistry in June after taking a course that would not prepare us for the exam... the honors class I took is the highest level of chemistry offered at my school... anyway, I got a 740. I'm a Junior, and planning on applying to very selective schools, so would it be advantageous of me to retake the chem SAT II? I already got an 800 on Math 2, and will be taking the exams in physics and spanish this upcoming may.

Disclaimer: I'm sorry, but I'm a perfectionist. I've written essays on it, and I know its a problem, and I really don't intend to be offensive or showy at all. I'm just saying this in advance because I brought this up with my friend who is angry with me because he got sub-600.

Welcome to CC, land of the perfectionists. We retake 790s on SAT IIs. :)

Retake the exam if you feel like you will be better prepared after some prep, and will put time into preparing. Don't retake if you're not going to study and learn more between now and the test.

A 740 is respectable, but for top schools, 750+ is safer.

I would retake the exam if I were you. If you do some more prep and study some more you should be able to score an 800 or in the 780-800 range. There is really no risk because if you do bad (worse than your original 740) colleges wont see it. They will only see the scores that you send and will not see the scores that you withhold.

I don't think that is a correct description of how College Board's new score choice system will apply to tests taken in the date range indicated in the OP's question.
