SAT II Tests to take for MIT

In sort of a last minute thought, I've decided to apply to MIT. My odds may not be high (my GPA isn't all that good and my SAT/ACt isn't something to write home about.), but I think I might have that extra something and I'll never know unless I try.

That said, I'm having difficulty deciding which SAT IIs to take.

For Math, MIT says either I or II work and it doesn't matter. I know II is the addition of trig and precalc, but is thier a benefit to taking II over I?

Science is a bit more confusing. I would either take physics or chemistry but I have similar work in each.

For chemistry I have:
-Semester of basic chem.
-Year of organic chem.
-Finishing a semester of ad. chem. (with a focus of structures and properties)

For Physics I have:
-Semester of basic physics.
-Finishing a semester of calc-based mechanics.

The issue is that for chem, I am not taking the 2nd class for reactions and stuff. As for physics, I'm not taking E&M until next semester. With that, I'm just really on the fence on what one to do since both will require some book study overall.

Any guidance would be great.

Thank you.

Hi! You might want to post this on the MIT board. As far as Math 1 vs Math 2, the colleges usually say that you should take whichever test matches your abilities. In other words, if you have taken precalculus, you should be taking Math2. If not, you can take Math1. I’m sorry I can’t help you with your other question. Good luck!

Personally, I would go with chemistry, but it’s up to you. MIT allows you to send either Math I or Math II - your choice. Again, personally, I’d say that if you know the material, take Math II. The curve is much better, and I’ve heard (anecdotally) that some other top colleges prefer Math II over Math I.

Best of luck with your application!

You won’t probably won’t survive MIT if you can’t handle Math II, no offense.

If you’ve actually taken the classes, Math II is FAR easier than Math I because of an easy curve (44/50 is the lowest score for an 800) and the harsher curve of Math I

If you are interested in a STEM field, it is probably in your own best interest to take the test that showcases your ability to do the more advanced math required on the Math2 exam.

Well I’m currently taking BC II for Calculus (in a 3 semester track) so I’ll probably do Math II considering the better curve too.

As for science, I’m still on the fence, but I’m skewing towards chem. I’ll learn a little about the stuff that I wouldn’t be learning this year anyway, compare to Physics where I am going to be taking E&M.
