SAT II tests

Hey everyone,
I'm a home schooling high school student (16 yrs), and I'm reading up on SAT II tests. I'm considering taking some of them early... but the answer to one very obvious question eludes me: How old does one have to be to take an SAT II test?

I read that it was advisable to take the corresponding SAT II tests shortly after completing subjects such as Biology, Physics, and American history, so that one is still able to recall most of the information gained during the course.

Does anyone have any advice on this?

When considering my application, will colleges apply less weight to an SAT II test score when the test has been taken close to the completion of the course rather than some time afterwards? Also, will taking SAT II tests unrelated to and not useful for my desired major convince colleges that I am not as focused on and interested in said major? So, for example, if I choose to go for a music major and take the SAT II test on Biology, would a college consider my application less seriously than, say, a student with equal musical experience/talent as myself who hasn't taken the unrelated tests?

Taking SAT II's will NOT hurt you. If you are a music major, you probably will not need any, unless you are going to a top university with a music program and want to keep options open. However, it will not hurt you to have taken them. (I can say that for sure, as my son is a music major who took science and other SAT II's.) In any case, those colleges that want SAT II's usually want a variety, such as Math, a Science or one in a field you want major in. Foreign language SAT II's can get you out of college foreign language requirements or get you placed in higher level courses.

It is usually best to take the corresponding SAT II just after completing the related course. The college probably will not even pay any attention to when the course or SAT II was taken, so don't worry about that. Take it when it works best for you.
