SAT II vs. College Math class credits

Do colleges still need a Math II test result if the student finishes high school AP Calc in sophomore year and then proceeds to local college to take further Calculus? I don't get why the pre-calc test score is so important, but I am new to this.

Only schools that request SAT II scores would require it, and then it most likely wouldn’t need to be a math one, though if you are still applying to schools that require SAT II’s taking the math test should be a breeze. It isn’t about credit, but about showing aptitude compared to peers.

Some schools require the Math II SAT subject test no matter what. (Carnegie Mellon’s computuer science program for example), but most don’t. However a kid who has taken AP Calc as a sophomore should easily be able to get a stellar score without effort - so just take it if you are interested in a college that requires it. There’s not much logic in the various requirements each college has.

If your child finds that an SAT II Math exam is necessary, be sure to have him/her do a practice test or two so that the math skills covered in the exam are fresh in mind on exam day. Sometimes students who are currently doing well in Calculus, etc. have rusty skills for Algebra and the like.

Simply because the SAT tests (and AP) tests are national in scope. Adcoms immediately know how to interpret those scores, (unlike your local college courses).

And of course, SAT Math 2 is pretty much a ‘requirement’ for anyone applying to a tech/engineering program, as well as some physical science majors (chem, physics).
