SAT II World History

I'm using Barron's and Kaplan to prepare for the test. Are their practice tests an accurate predictor for real test performance? I definitely hope they aren't because on Barron's I don't score as well as I wish I could..

Are there people on this board who have taken the test?

i took it got 720. I used kaplans exclusively. I hear barrons is much better (shakes fist at kaplan's). Kaplans is too short. I read it twice and only got a 720. example of my beef: didnt mention the name of confucius' book, making me answer a question wrong.

i agree that kaplan was erratic at times for the test. i got 480 on one of their practice tests, but i did great with a 740. One of the harder tests. Got to learn the history of mankind and civilization.

Barron's definitely worked for me. It was clear and precise. I got a 770 on the test in June!

Thanks for the inputs:)
Were there many questions of this type of test day: When did the battle of Lepanto occur?
Did you run out of time on the real test? That's one of my main problems..

i didnt run out of time, but everyones different. Oh BTW definitely take the "real" world history SATII. I looked through half of it and one of the questions on it was similar to a question on my WH exam (both were different pictures of baroque style i think). I knew it anyway, but there are bound to be 1 or more similar questions.

I got an 800, I used barron.

oh I took one of kaplans practice tests and got scared/****ed off, because I only got like a 650 and I felt like I was ripped off because the books synopsis seemed not to help at all. (question about shapes of arab buildings and female figure or something??)

ashernm - did you get a 650 on the real WH test? or on the practice test? I have Kaplan's and I'm a little scared because there is SO much info and their practice questions seem pretty detailed!

To those of you who used Barron's - I'm taking the WH test on Sat. Do you think I should buy Barron's and cram with it for a week or is Kaplan's ok since I'm already almost done with it?

"Were there many questions of this type of test day: When did the battle of Lepanto occur?"

No. As far as I can remember, they don't test dates at all. They do, however, test chronology. For example:
Put the following religions in chronological order (from the time they orignated):
Islam, Buddhism, Christianity

"Did you run out of time on the real test?"
No, time wasn't the problem for me. Just be sure to keep moving and don't get stuck on individual questions.

And to whoever's used Kaplans- take the test in Real SAT II's- it's much more realistic (duh) and much friendlier than the Kaplan's tests.

Should I take the World History exam? The problem is that I have never taken a real World History course (nor a Euro History one, for that matter), so I don't have much background in the subject area. I was extremely successful on the AP and SAT II US History exams.

I am currently reading Palmer's "History of the Modern World", a classic albeit difficult Euro History text. Do you think that if I finish that book, and supplement it with Barron's SAT II WH, PR's AP WH, and PR's AP Euro History, it will be enough to get an 800?

To mesotired9 and the others: thanks for sharing your experiences:)

I am a little scared about the test since I now realize that my background in history may not be enough for a nice score. Generally, I am good at history in school, but it turns out that in the us students cover much more of world history material. In Bulgaria, the textbooks include Europe (mainly) and some ancient civilizations (only Egypt, Mesopotamia, Indus Valley). So, when I started to prepare for the test about 3 weeks ago, I was terrified to see how much of the stuff is totally unfamiliar!

Well, I have 5 more days until the exam. Can you give me some guidelines as to how to make the most of my time? I started reviewing the material, but can you tell me on which areas to concentrate the most. Moreover, are there any questions that are likely to reappear?

Let's pray the test won't be a killer...

hey conker

good luck finishing that book in like 3 days

impossible.

worst reading ever

TAKE THE REAL SATII.
Kaplans book does not have enough information and the tests in it are too hard. I got 720 on the real thing.

conker you dont need to bother with any of the books except barrons probably. lots of people have gotten 800s with just barrons.

i used Barrons and got a 760. i was scoring in the low 600s on their practice tests. I use barrons for EVERYTHING

i'm a little nervous, it seems that Barron's is the better choice (if only I had known that sooner). What do you think I should do? I've read Kaplan's once, and am planning on studying with it over the next couple days. Should I cram for the test a different way? I really need a 700+ score on this test...

Oh also, I took a Kaplan's Practice Test today and got a 630 if that is any indicator of what I should do. Of course, you guys have said thier practice tests are too hard...

"good luck finishing that book in like 3 days

impossible.

worst reading ever"

Haha, I just realized that I didn't specify WHEN I was taking the test. I will probably be taking it June or December of NEXT year, LOL. So I don't have to finish that book in three days. Are you talking about Palmer by the way? Or Barron's? Cause Palmer really isn't that bad...

"conker you dont need to bother with any of the books except barrons probably. lots of people have gotten 800s with just barrons."

That's comforting, but did these people already have a good background in World History? I didn't really use any prep book for SAT II US History because I had the AP background, and I was very successful.

if you are not taking an AP European History or AP world history class (which i assume you are not because you would have mentioned that) i also recommend usign the Barrons book for the AP European exam. i hadnt thought of that earlier, i took AP Euro in school and used the Barrons for review on both the AP exam and the world history SAT II. in the barrons world history review book i just skipped all the parts about europe since i already knew them.
a lot of questions about non-western cultures are comparrisons to European events of history, so i very strongly recommend using the Barrons Euro AP book as well..
