I've been wondering/worrying about my SAT II scores for a while, but how much do SAT II scores affect the admission process?
I'm a senior applying to competitive schools for engineering (such as Carnegie Mellon) and my SAT II scores for Math II and Chemistry were in the low 700's, which isn't that great if you look at the percentiles. Are these scores going to hurt me?

You just answered your own question. yes, it will hurt you for Carnegie Mellon only, but for universities with lower standards, probably not. low 700s are considered very good score

I'd have to disagree with a flat out conclusion that a math SAT II in the low 700s will necessarily will hurt you. I think it depends on what the rest of your application looks like, for instance: Is this the only weak spot in an otherwise strong application? Do you have other accomplishments that show your strength in math (high level course work, competitions, etc.)? The math SAT IIs cover fairly low level math skills, and many kids do so so on them because much of it is review material.

I don't know...Carnegie Mellon's Engineering college has a very strong applicant pool.

I agree, but a single SAT II in an otherwise strong application is not going to lead to an automatic rejection.

The thing is, my grades are great for chemistry and math (acing AP chem and calc right now) and, although I don't have opportunities to participate in competitions at my school, I consider myself to be a strong student in math and science.
My best math and science scores for the ACT were 36 and 33, if that helps (although I don't really consider the science section for the ACT to be actual science).
Also, I'm retaking them in December so hopefully I'll score higher (I was just asking to see how it would affect me in case I don't improve).
