Will it hurt if I apply without any social science / humanity type SAT II's?

I'm applying to Columbia College 2014 and I'm hoping to get in ED and do premed. But I only took SAT II: Bio M, Chem, and Math II (all of which I scored 800's in).

Im Korean-American (born in U.S.) from Connecticut if that even matters.

Suggestions/comments?

With those kinds of scores in those kinds of tests, I’d say you’re pretty well set. Have you taken any AP’s in social science/humanities? Having high scores in those may also show your “well-rounded”-ness.

AP Coursework (11 listed): AP Bio (10), AP Chem (10), AP Language and Compostion (11), AP American History (11), AP Calculus BC (11), AP Physics B (11), AP Statistics (12), AP Environmental Sci (12), AP Literature and Compostion (12), AP Psychology (12), AP Econ (12).

So they won’t mind not having the humanities SAT II’s?

I have the same question. IMO, it may make you look one-dimensional. If you are okay at history I would suggest studying US hist. over the summer and have 4 solid SAT II’s

haha, I played it safe and took way too many SAT II’s.
I had 800s in math II, phys, chem, chinese, and 740 in french.

To be fair, I think it won’t be too big of a deal. Plenty of people get in with these SAT IIs. If you’re really concerned, I agree, write another one for fun (as long as you know you will do well).

Personally, if you know you can do well, I would take a humanities. At Columbia especially, you’re going to be doing a lot of reading (LitHum, anyone?), so proving that you actively like reading might help your app. I did way too many SAT IIs (800 USH, 750 Lit, 720 Chem, 690-WH 670 Bio, 650-Latin) In my own defense, I got higher scores as I went along (from just taking a regular course in bio to honors chem to Ap USH)

I think if you get a majority of 5’s on your non-tech AP’s (Lang, USH, ES, Lit, Psych, Econ), you got your tests done. Your official SAT score report doesn’t list AP’s, so make sure your school gets Columbia official scores somehow (mine showed up on my transcript).

yes, but the problem with that is that the colleges will never get my senior year AP exam scores since im taking them senior year.

so that leaves me with just APUSH and AP Lang and Comp to show

also, my sophomore year… i accidentally left 21 multiple choice questions blank on the AP biology exam (because i didn’t think to turn the page and do the lab question portion of the test… im know im dumb.) so I ended up getting a 4.

With that in mind… im predicting my scores to be…

AP Chem - 5 (done)
AP Bio - 4 (done, but hopefully conteracted by my SAT II bio)
AP Lang - 5
AP Calc BC -5
AP USH - 5
AP Physics B - 5

will the 4 hurt me…?

I took four (3x800 and a 780) but only because I’m homeschooled and they required it.

I do think having that many high scores helped

it really depends on your positioning effort. if your application’s theme is ‘passionate at math/science’ and you’re really trying to sell yourself on that, you may not need any of the humanities type things. for me, i was much more of a humanities type guy so i took tests in eng lit and ush.

now here’s the side note i wish i didn’t have to include. asians are routinely looked down upon in the admissions office for being ‘one dimensional math and science robots’. now, how much of a right the admissions committee has to declare an asian
‘a robot’ based on a cursory glance, i have no clue, but still, if you give off math science robo vibes, tread carefully. with this in mind, doing well in one or two humanities types things could serve you, as an asian, well.

i know this because i am asian.

^I understand that sentiment.

I took French just to offset that initial impression, though I only scored 740 on it.

humanities SATII’s look nice considering CC is largely focused on Humanities. If you were applying to SEAS, I would say that you are all set, however you may consider taking a hum SATII just to be safe. As for the AP tests, I had fives in bio, eng lang, and ush and a four in chem. i would not worry about a four - it is still a good score that, in many cases, can get you credit at Columbia. Your biggest task is to set yourself apart from the rest. as “thebeef” mentioned, many applicants that are looking at premed, are very strong in the math/science realm so make sure that you stand out among the “robots.”
