Hello,
I was wondering which test would be the best for me to take.
I have already taken 3 tests. I thought the math 1 was hard idk why...
I took the US History one and I had a bad teacher/I did not review so I ended up with a low score. ( I want to retake it)
I cannot take any of the languages except Spanish which I took and I did not do so well on.. I am in Spanish 4 yet I did not do well on the test :/
I want to pick between:
CHEM (Chem HN only (B in the class unweighted)
Math 1 (not a strong math student except in geometry)
World History (B+ in the class , 3 on the AP exam)
US History (A- , not sure about my scores yet)
Literature ( taking AP Lit in the fall)
Biology ( Bio HN B+ in the class unweighted)
or maybe Spanish w/ Listening if it is easier (Spanish 1 (A) , Spanish 2 (B+), Spanish 3 (B+), and Spanish 4 (B+)
Thank you for the feedback.
Also could you recommend the best books to prep/review for the subject tests :)

Why do you want to take more SAT2’s? Few colleges require more than 2, and most schools don’t require any.

I am trying to decide which 2 tests I want to take again because I didn’t do so well the first time @An0maly

If you search the forums, you can find book recommendations for all those subjects. There’s no trick to it - you just have to study and review the material. Often times colleges require Math2 instead of Math1, so you may want to look into that. I don’t know which courses you should take since you’ve had basically the same grades in all those classes. I would probably retake Math1 (as Math2 if you can) and US History and study for them and try to do well.

Unless your college requires them, I wouldn’t stress over them. But out of the ones you have chosen, I would stay away from spanish given its hard curve and math 1 for the same reason, especially given your weaknesses with that topic. Take practice tests using the blue book of subject tests and see which one you do better on. Lit is difficult unless you have good CR skills. The histories and bio are more straightforward and fact based, but regardless whichever one you take, study hard if you are going to take them. In addition, there is a thread out there for best SAT2 subject test books.

Okay sounds good! Well what do you guys think about Barons VS. PR? And yeah the curve for Math 1 is pretty bad and I am not that great at CR… I want to try CHEM’s SAT II so bad, but I am nervous lol. I really love Chemistry even though I ended with a B (ugh). Here is my verdict: I want to take Chem and US History since I do not remember much of World History. Do you think with my grades/courses that I will do well on the tests? @shawnspencer @An0maly

There is no direct correlation between grades in a course and performance on the test, however, study hard and do well on the practice tests and you will be fine. While you should be fine with an honors course in the subject, review the topics and see if there are anything you are unfamiliar with. Since I’m assuming you are taking it in October, you could always ask a teacher before the year starts.

Use barrons for chem…pr doesn’t go into as much depth, but the practice tests on pr are good.

Thank you I am buying Barrons for Chem, and for History I will buy Barrons as well! @happydolphin @shawnspencer

@happydolphin should I get the regular us history barrons book or the sat subject test barrons us history book?

no idea lol I only took math2 and chem

Okay thank you!
@happydolphin

bump

bump
Does anybody else have advice on the best subject test books to use for chem & us history!

First question is whether it makes sense to take them. It’s already summer, presumably before your senior year, and you are running out of time. If you don’t have an SAT or ACT score “in the bank” that you are comfortable with, then throwing in SAT subject tests is just overdoing it.

Many schools are moving away from the subject test requirements so they have become a “nice to have” rather than a “gotta have”. You don’t want to be pulled in too many directions; you have college apps, schoolwork, ECs, etc. this fall as well.

Really? Hmm well I am applying through QuestBridge and some of the schools I want to apply to require subject tests lol but I know I should probably focus on getting my SAT score up majorly and getting a high ACT score. @mobius911

Chemistry subject test is very hard in my opinion. If you got a B in the honors class and not the AP one then I would suggest not taking it. If you want to take it though, you can always just go to the library check out a subject review book for chem and take the practice test. Don’t buy Barrons until you know you at least have a chance at doing well on the test. Oh and if you’re stilll struggling with Math 1 I highly recommend PR although if you’re in precalc/trig or higher than universities expect math II(I’m studying for it now)

I will be taking Pre-Calc my senior year so I guess I would have to take the Math 1 test. @Gatortristan

You have to look at each school to see what is required. As a sample of requirements, I looked at the first 3 Questbridge schools (alphabetically) to see what they require. Amherst requires SAT plus two subject tests OR the ACT with writing. Bowdoin is test optional. Brown has the same requirement as Amherst.

I expect the other schools have similar requirements, so if you are considering the ACT then I would just focus on that. No need to spread yourself too thin.

Hmm okay I really want to just take the ACT, but hmm Dartmouth says I have to have the ACT and subject tests I agree with you! @mobius911
