i am planning on taking the SAT IIs for chem , bio and physics, i have had a year course in all of them, and am taking the AP classes next year...someone who has taken them. do i need to take Ap to know all the information, or can i take htem now

I took Bio and Chem without AP's.

SAT II required class experience < AP required class experience

junior89; how did you do? and how did you study?

I know for Bio you definitely don't need the AP class. Several of my friends took it after only regular Bio and got 750+ with minimal studying.. but it probably depends on your school

AP Classes will overprep you for the corresponding SAT II test.

You definitely do not need an AP class for Chem. First year Chem will basically cover everything, and if it doesn't, just read up on the review books a little. It's not that hard.

based on which SAT II's your taking, you should take a math as well.

variety is a good thing, and if you're majoring in the sciences, math is important.

I took the physics without the AP class. I haven't gotten the scores yet, but it went generally well. AP is definitely harder, though you'll probably have a much better chance of scoring high (~800) after your AP classes.

What do you learn in chem? im taking it next year i really dont know anything about it. All i know is:
I HATE bio
I LOVE math

so i hear chem=mathy. good for me right?

chem isnt too bad- requires solid knowledge of concepts though.

physics- JOKE. i learned all of electricity and magnetism the night before the test and i still got an 800. somehow. maybe they made a mistake.

chrischang, I am planning on taking SAT II physics, does taking AP physics B help? or physics C?

I really don't think an AP physics course is necessary for you to do well on the SAT II. My honors physics class this year, which students consider to be AP level (although it moves much slower), would've overprepared me for the SAT II had I decided to take it. At the beginning of the year, I bought the Kaplan prep book to help me with the concepts (because I suck at physics), but after I looked through it once or twice, what it contained seemed like basic knowledge compared to what went on in the classroom.

You definitely don't need any AP classes to take those tests. I took SAT II bio (M) and chem based on my knowledge from honors classes. I had to study some stuff on my own, but most of it was covered. I did well on bio, but my score in chem was disappointing. However, other kids also only had an honors background took it the same time I did and got very high scores (770+).

i agree. you really dont need to take the "AP" class to do well. just as long as you take some kind of class related to the subject (as long as its not essentials or "conceptual" or something like that)

You should compare what you have learned in your previous classes with the content covered on the SATIIs. I took honors bio freshman year and our curriculum did not even almost cover everything on the SATII, so I'm not taking the SATII bio until after the AP course. I think in general, if you can take the AP class you might as well because your score on the SATII will probably be higher, but it completely depends on how much you have already learned.
