SAT II's

I just got a quick question. My younger brother is planning to take the SAT II: US History, Math IC, and Chemistry. What book would you guys suggest I get him to prepare. When i took my SAT II's, i just used Barrons for US History, Kaplan for Math IC, and Barrons again for Chem.

bumperooooo

Dont take IC. IC says "I suck at math, but I need a math score to apply to collge". IIC says "I may not be good at math, but I'm not stupid." I got an 800 on my IIC, and it said I was in 90th percentile. This means 1 in 10 ppl get 800's. IIC scores are highly inflated.

No tips on US history, never took it

For Chemistry, have him take it June, right after he finishes his chemistry class. If he takes it the next year, he will forget a lot, making review very tough. If he takes it before his course finishes, he may not have the whole curriculum to back him up for the SATII. This generally goes for all SATII subjects.

Any SATII book will do for SATII Chem and probably history. As for SATII math, I would suggest trying to get your hands on a real SATIIC test from collegeboard, or getting multiple books. I found that Barron's SATIIC practice test contains insanely hard problems that arent even on the real test.

Phoenixfenix -- That's absurd. You're stupid.

rExRuN467 -- What phoenixfenix said about Math IC versus IIC is totally not true. I took IC, got a 700, and got into Yale with a prospective major in "Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology" (I mention the MCDB major because of required calculus and statistics courses for the major). So completely disregard that freaking ridiculous comment.

For the IC, I prepared with the Princeton Review IC/IIC book. It was very helpful. There's also a "Real SATIIs" book; it's big and blue. Unlike the Princeton Review book, "Real SATIIs" has real tests in it (one from each subject).

Sorry, I didn't take Chemistry or U.S. History, but the Princeton Review should have books for those subjects as well. The chem. and U.S. History tests would also be in the "Real SATIIs" book.

If you have taken a year of Chem and U.S. History and are pretty intelligent, you should be able to get 700+ on your SAT II's easy.

SO basically...princeton review is the best prep for Math...OK THANX.im just worried...im a first gerneration korean and i screwed up plenty of times in high school starting from straight B's to Straight A's in Soph and Junior year..i just want my brother to go to a great college to fufill his goal of being a top architect.

Dunno about that. I only know from what I've been told, and what I've seen. From what I've seen, no one I know has gotten into any decent school with at IC test score

I guess you're the exception. However, In general, I would suggest it is a better idea to take the IIC. It gives you a competative edge over everyone who has taken the IC. As long as you're decent in math, you should be able to easily pull a 700+ on the IIC.

Also, Biology isnt exactly something to brag about in terms of math. Nor is Calculus or Stats. I've finished Calc BC and plan to take Stats either next semester, or this summer, and I'm still in high school. SATIIC is generally considered "Math for engineers" from what I've been told. Which is quite silly, because the trig and math is almost middle school level.

well..my younger brother is trying to major in history..so I just told him dat since he's applying with a major dat has nothing to do with math, he might as well take IC. Well, but if u guys say dat IIC will give the edge, then i guess my bro must take it.

Let me put it this way: if he took Pre-calculus (or Calculus, obviously), and did well, take IIC. If he didn't, take IC.

History majors dont generally become architects

If he's gonna do a history major, then dont worry about IC or IIC. If he's gonna be an architect, that may require some heavy math, i.e. calc, stats, linear algebra, multivariable, and diff eq. In that case, IIC will give him an edge that he will need, especially if he lives in california, is asian, and hopes to attend a UC. If thats the case, IIC is pretty much mandatory.

phoenixfenix -- Don't assume anything about me. I've taken AP Stats and AP Calc. I'm not bragging about a bio major. I'm using bio as an example, seeing as stats and calc classes are included in the major. So what are you bragging about?

rexrun -- Just have your brother take practice tests in both. Whichever one he does better on, or thinks he can do better on, he should prep for and take.

Nothing personal, but I've already assumed a few things from what you've said:

Quite frankly, I'm wasnt talking about you. I was talking about your major. Secondly, I dont see why you're so offensive. I'm trying to help rExRuN467 and you keep throwing crap at me.

Some people...

if you want to switch your subject test (from bio to spanish, for example), how would you go about doing it?

as long as there isn't a speaking portion, you can switch the day of if you want.

i signed up to take IIC, US History, and Writing, and the day of I took
IC, Lit, and Writing hee hee
