what role do SAT II's play in the admissions of the top like 35 schools? will a lower 600 kill your chances....? what is the deal with them?

For schools in the top 35 that require or highly recommend them (and not all do, e.g., Michigan ignores SAT IIs for admission), you should consider them important and that large numbers of applicants have scores in the 700s. Does it kill your chances with a score in the lower 600s? No. Does it weaken them? Probably.
