Do you have to take SAT II's to apply or is it just recommended?

I'm fairly certaine that they are just recommended. Although I took them and submitted my scores, they are really just used in placement once a student has been admitted and enrolled.

So would I be at a disadvantage if I opted not to take them and just retake my reasoning test? I basically just want to get in.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that any school you submit SAT I scores to will also see your SAT II scores as the College Board sends a report of all tests taken.

Schmoomcgoo, that is correct. Your score report has scores for all SAT and SATII exams on it.

sooo... I'm ok not having any SAT II's

i could be wrong, and Dean J can respond, but UVA (i'm sure of this) USED to REQUIRE SATIIs. they were required for my d's time. (hs class of '03). besides, when a school, ESPECIALLY one as competitve as UVA says even a "recommended" you do it, as it may come down to admission between a few, some with some without IIs. but i think they are rquired!

I'm in the same kind of dilemma...

I'm applying in-state and I'm unhappy with my SAT scores, they don't exactly meet standards. I took the October test so those scores are still pending but would it be in my best interests to take SAT II's in December or have another go at the SAT I? I of course missed the November deadline so I'm in a bind for the December one...also I don't know what subjects to take the SAT II's on, I might not even score well on those...:-/

nat, thats an interesting question. What are you SAT scores?

I would say that if they dont go up this time you have 2 choices:

Study HARD for the SAT for the third time, scores dont go up on their own.

or

Study HARD for the SATII

Depending on your SATI scores, I would opt for the second. If it doesnt go up this time, it probably wont go up again. It doesnt for most people.

this question has been asked before. please search for our previous answers - basically, if a school recommends something... you should probably do it, as it will only help your chances. what does it say to uva if you don't take any? if it comes down to it and they have to choose between you and another applicant who has taken sat ii's, who do you think they will choose? maybe it won't come down to it, maybe you're strong enough without it. but even dean j said in the previous forums on this that you should probably just do it.

I don't know if SAT IIs are recommended or required, but most people here state they're recommended.

However, one quick look to collegeboard.com contradicts that and says, "What the School Says...We require scores from either the SAT I or the ACT for both first year and transfer students. Three SAT II's are also required: the first in writing, the second in either level of mathematics, and the third in any other subject."

the collegeboard is wrong.

(often)

the collegeboard was right four years ago. BESIDES, with all this discussion...DO THE DAMN SAT IIs! this is not a do-only-what-i-have-to kind of school!!

What if you take the SAT IIs and dont do very well? Since they are not required, will your scores lower your chances or will admissions simply just not consider them? I guess what I am trying to ask is are the scores mainly meant to help you or can they also go against you?

My d is a first year and did not take the SAT IIs (and neither did her roommate), so obviously, they are not required. Not saying this is the best route to go, only that they are not required.

pagemaster~ you can ask Dean J but more is always better, i think. can't hurt you, as it shows "going beyond" what is required. but i'll still say that back in 2003 and 2004 or so they WERE required. i knew kids who didn't apply solely based on that requirement.

I would go ahead and take them, but I know of people going back to the 02-03 cycle who got in without them.

hmmm...then i know a bunch of kids who either overworked, or lost a chance to apply. seriously, i remember SEEING them as a requirement , but it really doesn't matter. whatever...but if i really wanted a top, impossible-to-get-into-OOS-school like uva, i'd give it all i got!!

Should you take them twice? I took three SAT 2s in November. I think I did fairly well on them. However, if I got like below a 650 should I retake them?

Also do the SAT 2s get noticed in the admissions process? I hope they do cuz otherwise wouldn't they be a waste to take now?
