Hi -
I've been looking into taking the SAT exam this January, and am wondering if I'm too late. The official SAT registration deadline isn't until December 26th, which got me thinking I had loads of time. I've contacted my local test centres, but they're very slow in responding. Also, does anyone know what the odds are like for "standby" places?

Don't contact the local test centres, that's gonna take long long.

Go onto the Collegeboard website where you can sign up online (account registration required)

Testing standby depends on the test centre. My two friends who wanted to test standby at a test centre in Singapore were successful, but again, it depends on the test centre's vacancies. Since January's a popular last-minute test date, I wouldn't risk testing standby and would try my best to register online.

Absolutely. Register online. If you have trouble, then the Fulbright Foundations Educational Advising Service could probably let you know which testing centres tended to have space.
