sat match grid ins q

Hi! i just took a practice test from collegeboard and bumped into these types of questions
check the following one

Three more than twice a number is equal to 4. What is the number?
Step 1: A A A A
Step 2: A A A A

the As represent the boxed where youre supposed to write your answer now i dont have have problem with the question itself but what do they want us to write in step 1? i personally thought maybe of a guidance step to show how you received but that doesnt really work when you only have 4 boxes i quickly figured out that step 2 is where you insert your answer are we obligated fill in the step 1?

thanks in advance
edit i mean math of course

2n+3=4
2n=1
n=1/2

Just bubble in 1/2

i actually know the answer its not the question that i dont understand its what to fill in in Step 1 since you write your answer in step 2

in step 2 i wrote 0.5 i left step 1 blank

On the grid-in answer sheet for the actual test, there are four boxes in which you can write the answer (step 1), and then below it bubble in what you just wrote (step 2). Step 1 is optional although highly recommended.
