How do u minimize careless mistakes in this section?

As an SAT math tutor and author of an SAT math book I can give you a few tips:

(1) make sure you know all the SAT math strategies. Using strategies instead of doing things directly tends to minimize being tricked by the test makers.
(2) leave time at the end of the test to “check” over you answers. When checking your answers, you need to actually redo the problem without looking at your original solution. If possible you should use a different method, or the same method in a different way.
(3) what many students call “making careless errors” is actually the test makers succeeding in tricking them. Practice will reduce this. Make sure you’re practicing SAT math problems 10 to 20 minutes per day.
(4) Don’t rush. Take your time doing each problem.

Best of luck!

Here are some of the strategies Dr. Steve is talking about:

To minimize errors:
-You want to underline all the important words, and reread the questions before solving.
-Backsolving and plugging in numbers is always good for checking work.

When asked for a distance, area, or other measurement problem, ALWAYS be sure you know what is being measured. E.g., if they state someone goes up a trail at a certain speed and comes back down it at a certain speed in 2 hours, and they ask how long the trail is, be sure you’re not solving for the length of the entire trip.
