I’m really horrible at math! I took the SAT practice test online and only got a 370 on the math. (I guessed and got 22 wrong so that really hurt me) What can I do to quickly raise my math score? I’m taking the SAT in the morning! HELP!
Why are you taking the SAT if you got so low score on math?
DON’T GUESS.Try to study and practice a lot. Read the questions you got wrong on the test and try to understand why you got them wrong.
I’m afraid there’s not much you can do this late but maybe take as many practice sections as you can and see what you got wrong and read the explanations for them. By the way, what was the last math class you took?
I agree with Jr. Don’t take it unless you absolutely have to. Spend some time studying and reviewing real college board practice tests this summer and the take the test in October.
Wait SAT Math or SAT II Math? @CHD2013 i think @Unashamed116 has to take either SAT or ACT and bot have math sections on them…
^I know. But if he/she is a junior or younger, it would make more sense to take one of them after studying over the summer.
^ agree. You got October…
I agree with the above posters - focus on gaining some good math fundamentals before taking the SAT (or even preparing for it, IMO).
Since you’re taking it tomorrow (today?) you don’t have many options. As a rule of thumb, I wouldn’t guess unless you can eliminate 2 or 3 answer choices (you still have positive EV if you only eliminate 1, but not much at all). But yeah, I would’ve prepared better beforehand or postponed it.
I did prepare… I scheduled the SAT in March or April and have been studying and prepping ever since. I have taken Algebra 1, Geometry, Business Math, and Algebra 2. I know all of the material on the test, but I have AWFUL test anxiety AND I’m AWFUL at math. I can do it in my head and get the right answer (or close to it), but I can’t tell you how I got it. But, the biggest thing with the SAT math is my test anxiety. It makes me forget how to do anything and I totally lose it. I’m really good at writing and critical reading, but math is definitely my weakness. Please don’t judge me or act like a 400 (or whatever I get) is awful and I’ll never get into college. I don’t need that. I didn’t ask for your thoughts on my mathematics handicap. lol I simply asked for any studying tips you might have. Thank you for your replies and I hope you all did well on your tests.
OK, let’s cut your losses and focus on the October SAT.
Here’s how I suggest you prepare.
Go into a bookstore and look at the SAT prep books-- no online shopping!!
Here’s what I want you to look for: After each practice test, there’s a page with a grid. It lists the topics being tested, then lets you know which problems target those topics. (So, for example: circles: 3, 15, 18
proportions, 6, 11
(I happen to have the Barrons handy, but it’s not the only one)
Take 2 or 3 whole tests-- so you’re talking close to 10 math sections, 10 verbal sections.
Highlight the ones you get wrong, circle the ones you skip.
Then pull all those grid pages, and look for patterns. Which types of problems are you getting wrong? That will let you know here you need to begin working for October.
Then look at the numbers you’re getting wrong. If you tend to get everything after # 15 wrong, try doing a practice test where you stop at #15, and see how you do.
(And, yes even with a 370, you can get into college. It won’t be Harvard, but there are options out there.)
Good luck!!!
You will get into college. Try to study this summer. I like the idea what @bjkmom proposed. Math is just to see the pattern. Practice will help you see that. I will suggest you the pwnthesat math book. Try to not think on the time.
