SAT Math II sophomore or junior yr?

S is a sophomore, just finishing Pre-calc, top math student. Should he take the Math II now, while the material is fresh, or wait until the end of junior year and two semesters of Calculus? Seems to me one of his teachers recommended taking it now, but I can't remember why! Thanks.

do it now so he can get it over with. most students who take this test take it right after they finish precal anyways

I’m taking the test as a junior, and I am in Calc this year. I don’t think it is a disadvantage to take it later, that way you don’t have to pay the $20 fee again for the other subject tests. I remembered most everything because calc builds on trig. I took a sample test cold and got a 730, so I think there isn’t much of an advantage to take it earlier!

i’m a sophomore doing precalc now. Gud to know that its ok to take math2 during fall of (junior)Calc year. I’ll be fine with the Trig and Precalc stuff for the SAT2 now in June, but i want to review alg1, 2 and geometry before taking it. i can study over the summer so I can give it my best shot.
what do you think?

I would recommend taking the sat math2 this year. Most (85%ish) of the materials are already covered. And the test itself is pretty straight forward, plus thats one less test to worry about next year.

If he’s good enough at math, it doesn’t really matter when he takes it. Either should be fine.

does math IIc have many problems with vectors?

I didn’t have any on my test.

I would say take the test this year. I was in the same boat, pre-calc. my sophomore year and took the June SAT II and got a 800 on the exam.

There would be one vector problem on the test max. Sometimes there are none.

I’m in the same situation. I plan to take the Math II exam in June, just after my Pre-Cal class finishes.

I’m also a sophomore in pre-cal - taking the math II test in June. There no help in waiting until next year.

I took it sophomore year after finishing precalc over the summer, and got a 750 without any studying. So I took it against a few months later with studying, and got an 800.

Honestly, there’s no reason to wait. It’ll probably be even harder, seeing as he’ll forget a lot of the concepts as time goes on.

I did mine June after my Junior year. I could have done it sophomore year but I didn’t even know subject tests existed then :P

I’m in the same boat as you…took PreCalc last year (got an A, with some struggle) and AP Calc this year as a junior…I just started reviewing for the Math II and realized there are definitely things I don’t remember at all. Reviewing will be painful for me. Even though I find Calc pretty easy, I guess I tried to block out PreCalc, ha.

Take it right away if the extra 20 bucks isn’t a problem. You’ll thank yourself later, trust me.
